Kroningsquiltontwerpen Serie Deel 2

In deel 1 heb ik vier blokken laten zien die iets met ‘Koningin’ te maken hebben. Vandaag laat ik weer een plaatje zien uit mijn EQ7 Schetsboek, met vier blokken. 

Deze vier verwijzen naar onze nieuwe Koning. Vanaf linksboven met de klok mee:

• Het profiel van de huidige Prins van Oranje, straks Koning Willem-Alexander. Het lijkt iets beter dan het silhouet van Koningin Máxima, hoewel ik ook hier niet precies een foto kon overtrekken.
• Het blok daarnaast is een ‘Coronation block’ [Kroningsblok], uit BlockBase.
• Daaronder een doodgewoon ninepatch blok dat in de quilt toch iets speciaals voorstelt.
• En tenslotte het ‘King’s Crown’ [Koningskroon] blok, uit de EQ Libraries.

Deze blokken bestaande uit vierkanten en driehoeken zijn natuurlijk allemaal te maken met Inklingo-patroondelen. Kijk onder ‘Support’ in de Index of Shapes [Index van Patroondelen] voor alle beschikbare maten vierkanten (onder ‘polygons’) en driehoeken.  

Zie je de verschillen en de overeenkomsten met de vier blokken uit de vorige post?*

*Overeenkomsten: de kleuren oranje (voor het Koningshuis, van Oranje-Nassau), rood, wit en blauw (van de Nederlandse vlag).

Het verschil: rechte lijnen bij de blokken voor de Koning, en ronde lijnen voor de Koningin.

In part 1 I showed four blocks that have something to do with ‘Queen’. Today I am showing another picture from my EQ7 Sketchbook, with four blocks. These four refer to our new King.

From top left clockwise:

• The profile of the current Prince of Orange, soon King Willem-Alexander. It is a better likeness than Queen Máxima’s silhouette, even though I could not  trace a picture exactly.  
• The next block is a Coronation Block from BlockBase.
• Next a common ninepatch block that does represent something special in the quilt.
• And finally the King’s Crown block, from the EQ Libraries.

And of course all of these blocks from squares and rectangles can be made entirely from Inklingo shapes. Look under ‘Support‘ in the Index of Shapes for all available sizes of squares (under ‘polygons’) and triangles.

Do you see what is the same and what is different about these blocks compared to the four blocks from the previous post?*

*Similarities: the colors (orange for the Royal House, of Orange-Nassau), red, white and blue (colors of  the flag of The Netherlands).

The difference: straight lines for the King’s blocks, and curved lines for the Queen’s.

Kroningsquiltontwerpen Serie Deel 1

Ter gelegenheid van de troonsbestijging van onze nieuwe Koning, de huidige Prins van Oranje, Willem-Alexander op 30 april a.s. heb ik een ‘kronings’quilt ontworpen in EQ7. (‘Kroning’ staat tussen aanhalingstekens omdat Nederlandse monarchen niet echt gekroond worden.)

De feestelijke onthulling hiervan ga ik uitsmeren over een serie blogposts. Ik hoop dan op de grote dag het hele ontwerp hier op Stof Genoeg te hebben staan. Vandaag maak ik je alvast een beetje lekker met het volgende:

De quilt zit vol met van alles wat: symboliek, een beetje appliqué, meer patchwork, Inklingobare blokken, blokken uit de EQ Libraries, uit BlockBase, en zelfgetekende blokken.

En… hij is groot! Totaal 98,5 x 108,25 inch [250,2 cm. x 275 cm.]. Iets voor aan een paleismuur dus, of het zojuist heropende Rijksmuseum (Voor de duidelijkheid, ik ga dat ding dus echt niet maken, he!).

Het plaatje is van mijn EQ Schetsboek, met vier blokken.

Het silhouet moet prinses Máxima voorstellen, de aanstaande Koningin. Helaas kon ik geen geschikte foto van haar vinden om over te trekken, vandaar dat het niet echt lijkt. Dus heb ik maar gewoon een van de silhouetten uit de EQ Libraries wat aangepast.

De overige blokken zijn: (met de klok mee vanaf het silhouet), een Orange Peel variatie met een ring driehoekjes eromheen die een kroon kunnen voorstellen.

Dit is een Inklingoblok dat ik zelf heb ontworpen. Je kunt het als een 12 inch [30,5 cm.] blok maken als je patroondelen combineert uit de 8 inch [20,32 cm.] Orange Peel Inklingocollectie en uit de Dresden Plate Fancy Pieced collectie. Maar in dit ontwerp gebruik ik het blok in een andere maat.

Queen’s Star [Koninginnester] is een blok uit BlockBase. Queen’s Crown [Koninginnekroon] is ook een blok uit BlockBase.

Zie je al een beetje welke kant het opgaat met de symboliek?

EQ7 Sketchbook with four blocks from the Coronation Quilt

For the occasion of the enthronement of our new King, the current Prince of Orange, Willem-Alexander, I designed a ‘coronation’ quilt. (Dutch monarchs are not actually crowned.)

The festive reveal of my design will be spread over a series of posts. I hope that I will have the entire design here on Stof Genoeg by the big day (April 30).

Today I am giving you a little teaser: The quilt is full of symbolism, a little appliqué, plenty of pieced blocks, Inklingoable blocks, blocks from the EQ Libraries, from BlockBase, and blocks I drafted myself.

And… it is large! Total dimensions are 98.5 x 108.25 inches [250.2 cm. x 275 cm.] Fit for a palace wall, or the newly reopened Rijks Museum in Amsterdam. (Just to be clear, I am not actually going to make this quilt!)

The picture is from my EQ Sketchbook, with four blocks.

The silhouette is supposed to portray Princess Máxima, our future Queen. But it is not a great likeness, because I could not find a suitable picture of her to trace. So I just adapted one of the silhouettes from the EQ Libraries instead.

The following blocks are: (clockwise from the silhouette), an Orange Peel Variation with a ring of triangles around it that could symbolize a crown.

This is an Inklingo block I designed myself. You can make it as a 12 inch [30.5 cm.] block if you combine shapes from the 8 inch [20.32 cm.] Orange Peel Inklingo collection and from the Dresden Plate Fancy Pieced collection. But in this design I use the block in a different size.

Queen’s Star and Queen’s Crown are both from BlockBase.

Can you see where the symbolism in this quilt is going?

Klassieke New York Beauty Quilts, met van die puntige sashings tussen de ronde blokken vind ik fantastisch! Als je niet weet wat ik bedoel: op Willy Wonky’s blog vind je hiervan prachtige voorbeelden.

Ik heb in EQ geëxperimenteerd met patchwork sashings van (alleen maar) Inklingo patroondelen, en dit waren de mooiste.

Ik laat ze hier in verschillende settings zien, met verschillende Inklingo blokken (New York Beauty blokken, Double Sunflower blokken) en verschillende variaties van contrast en donker-licht verdeling in de sashings.

De sashings zijn 4,5 inch breed [11,4 cm.] en 12 inch [30,5 cm.] lang.

Je kunt ze combineren met ‘kwartetten’ van 6 inch [15.2 cm.] blokken, of met 12 inch [30,5 cm.] blokken.

In de hoekstenen passen 4,5 inch blokken, zoals hier de achtpuntige ster die je maakt met de gratis Inklingo collectie patroondelen.

Voor de sashings heb ik  de Inklingo 60 graden driehoeken gebruikt met zijden van 2 inch [5,1 cm.].

Daartussen een setting strip van ca. 1 inch (om precies te zijn: 1,03 inch of 2,6 cm.), om de sashing 4,5 inch breed te maken.

Een quiltsetting met opvallende sashings is ook erg geschikt om een sampler met verschillende blokken tot een mooi geheel te maken.

Een voorbeeld is mijn Burlington Beauty quiltontwerp, een sampler met 12 van Linda Franz’s variaties van New York Beauty blokken die je kunt maken met de verschillende NYB Inklingo-collecties.

Linda woont in Burlington (Ontario, Canada), en ze is een beauty in elk opzicht, dus vandaar de naam!

I think classic New York Beauty Quilts, with the spiky sashings, are wonderful!

If you don’t know what I mean, you can see great examples on Willy Wonky’s blog.

I have experimented in EQ7 with pieced sashings made of only Inklingo Shapes, and these were the prettiest I came up with.

I am showing them here in different sets, with various Inklingo blocks (New York Beauty blocks, Double Sunflower blocks), and in variations of contrast and light-dark coloring in the sashings.

The sashings are 4.5 inch wide and 12 inches long.

You can combine them with ‘quartets’ of 6 inch blocks, or with 12 inch blocks.

In the corner stones you can set 4.5 inch blocks, like the eight pointed star you can make from the free Inklingo collection of shapes.

For the sashings I used the 60 degree triangles with 2 inch sides.

In between I used a setting strip of about 1 inch wide (1.03 inch to be exact), to finish the sashings at 4.5 inches wide.

A quilt layout with strong sashings is very suited for nicely pulling together a sampler quilt with a variety of different blocks.

An example is my Burlington Beauty quilt design, a sampler with 12 of Linda Franz’ variations of New York Beauty blocks that you can make with her NYB Inklingo shape collections.

Linda lives in Burlington (Ontario, Canada), and she is a beauty in every sense, hence the name!

Of course you could also alternate the 12 inch NYB blocks in your sampler with other 12 inch Inklingo blocks with a circular shape, like the (Double) Sunflower or the Fancy Pieced Dresden Plate Blocks with a single ring of triangles.

Club EQ Challenge Design March 2013

De Club EQ Challenge van maart is de eerste waaraan ik in 2013 heb meegedaan. De opdracht was ‘Curved Piecing’, dus ontwerp een quilt met ronde naden (geen appliqué). 

Linda Franz van Inklingo verbond er nog een prijs aan: Als je voor 31 maart een quiltontwerp voor de Challenge inzendt dat gebruik maakt van een Inklingo-patroon met ronde naden, met Inklingo in de naam van je inzending, krijg je een abonnement op online quilttijdschrift The Quilt Pattern Magazine kado.

Ze heeft op haar All About Inklingo Blog een aantal EQ projecten met Inklingo-blokken met ronde naden die je zo kunt downloaden, dus meedoen is een fluitje van een cent. Je hoeft zelf niets te tekenen!

Voor mijn inzending (bovenaan) heb ik een van haar Inklingo New York Beauty blokken gebruikt (NYB 02, blok 04) en de door mijzelf in EQ7 getekende Inklingo Clamshell Pickle blokken.

Je kunt je eigen variatie maken met elk van de 6 inch [15.2 cm.] Inklingo New York Beauty blokken. Of probeer kwarten van de 12 inch [30,5 cm.] Inklingo Fancy Pieced Dresden Plate blokken.

Nadat ik hem had ingezonden, bedacht ik dat de quilt er waarschijnlijk beter uit zou zien met sashings in het middendeel. Iets rustiger. Dus die heb ik later ook nog getekend, om hier te laten zien.

March’s Club EQ Challenge was the first one  I entered in in 2013. The challenge was ‘Curved Piecing’.

Inklingo’s Linda Franz threw in a prize: If you enter a quilt design in the Challenge before 31 March, using an Inklingo pattern with curved piecing, with Inklingo in the name of your entry, you will get a subscription to The Quilt Pattern Magazine.

On her All About Inklingo Blog she has several EQ projects available for downloading, with Inklingo blocks with curved seams, so entering is easy as pie. No need to draw anything yourself!

For my entry (complete top of this post) I used one of her Inklingo New York Beauty blocks (NYB 02, block 04), and a block drafted in EQ by myself, the Inklingo Clamshell Pickle.

You can make your own variation with any of the 6 inch Inklingo NYB blocks. Or try quarters of the 12 inch Inklingo Fancy Pieced Dresden Plate Blocks.

After I entered, it occurred to me that the quilt would probably look better with sashings in the center. Less busy. So I drafted that version as well, to show here.

Het is de derde zaterdag van maart, en dat betekent ‘Nationale Quiltdag’ in de Verenigde Staten.

Op ‘The Quilt Show’ (het ‘internet-televisiestation’ van Alex Anderson en Ricky Tims dat helemaal aan quilten gewijd is)  kun je het hele weekend gratis alle 140+ afleveringen bekijken. Je moet alleen een gebruikersnaam en wachtwoord aanmaken (free membership), als je die nog niet hebt.

It is the third Saturday of March, and that means National Quilting Day in the USA.

The Quilt Show, (the ‘internet TV station’ of Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims that is devoted entirely to quilting), offers all of their 140+ shows to watch for free  this weekend. All you need to do is create a username and password for a free membership, if you are not already a member.

There are always a couple of free shows available, so  try to choose from the other 130 or so! Maybe show #911, in which Dutch quilter and pattern designer Jacqueline de Jonge (of Be Colourful) shows you how she makes her colorful paperpieced quilts?

3 inch [7.6 cm] Pieced Hexagon Blocks

Some of the -still!- most popular posts on my blog are from 2011, about the VariaHex quilt (shown on the cover of the magazine pictured above).

The original VariaHex quilt is made of different pieced hexagons with 2.5 inch [6.4 cm.] sides, using English Paper Piecing (EPP). 

I have provided information for making this quilt in an easier and quicker way, namely with Inklingo. 

To take maximum benefit of the Inklingo advantages, I recommend that you make it with 3 inch [7.6 cm.] hexagons. Inklingo offers more possibilities for 3 inch hexagons than for smaller sizes.

Just how much variety in blocks you can achieve was shown by Linda Franz, in two recent posts on her All About Inklingo Blog. Go check the pictures of different pieced 3 inch hexagons here and here, and find out what you need to make these blocks!

3 inch [7,6 cm.] Samengestelde Zeshoek Blokken

Een paar van de -nog altijd!- populairste posts op mijn blog dateren uit 2011, over de Variahex quilt (afgebeeld op het omslag van het tijdschrift in het plaatje bovenaan).

De originele Variahex quilt bestaat uit verschillende samengestelde zeshoeken met zijden van 2,5 inch [6,4 cm.], gemaakt met de Engelse patchworkmethode, waarbij je naait om papiertjes.

Ik heb informatie gegeven over een makkelijkere en snellere manier om deze quilt te maken, nl. met Inklingo.

Om maximaal profijt te trekken van de voordelen van Inklingo, adviseer ik om deze quilt te maken met 3 inch [7,6 cm.] hexagonnen. Inklingo biedt namelijk meer mogelijkheden voor 3 inch zeshoeken dan voor kleinere maten.

Inklingo Mystery Quilt with New Collection

Linda Franz heeft een nieuwe collectie Inklingo patroondelen uitgebracht, New York Wheel 6 inch. [15,2 cm].
Mijn handen jeuken om er in EQ7 mee te spelen, want deze patroondelen combineren prachtig met de New York Beauty Collecties, voor allerlei nieuwe variaties.

Bij aankoop van elk van deze collecties krijg je Linda’s prachtige Sunflower Design Book er GRATIS bij. De informatie uit het Sunflower Design Book is namelijk ook van toepassing voor de New York Beauty en New York Wheel patronen.

Maar Linda heeft ook nog iets helemaal nieuws bedacht, speciaal voor bij de New York Wheel collectie patroondelen… een Mysterie Quilt! Dit Mysterie heet ‘The Case of the Secret Garden’ [De Zaak van de Geheime Tuin, in het kort COTSG].

Voor degenen die niet weten hoe een mysteriequilt werkt, leg ik het kort even uit. Linda publiceert elke week een nieuwe aanwijzing/instructie voor het voorbereiden of maken van een deel van deze kleine quilt (wandkleedje). Die instructies voer je uit, zonder dat je weet hoe het eindresultaat eruit komt te zien.

Om het extra spannend te maken, combineert Linda in deze quilt de New York Wheel collectie met de Gratis Inklingo-Collectie Patroondelen voor een 4,5 inch [11,4 cm] achtpuntige ster.

Ik loop een beetje achter op dit blog, want Linda heeft aanwijzing nr. 1 al bekendgemaakt, nl. de benodigde hoeveelheden stof, en waar je op moet letten bij het kiezen van je vier stoffen (veel contrast, en prints zonder richting). In de Inklingo Yahoo Group zijn al aardig wat enthousiaste deelnemers, met foto’s van hun gekozen stoffen.

Maar je bent nog ruim op tijd om mee te doen! Kijk naar alle foto’s voor inspiratie, en duik in je eigen lapjesvoorraad! Ik heb (nu) zelf helaas geen gelegenheid om de mysteriequilt te maken, maar ik vind het erg leuk om te volgen wat alle anderen doen.

Linda Franz has released a new Inklingo collection of shapes, New York Wheel 6 inch.

My hands are itching to play with it in EQ7, because the shapes combine beautifully with the New York Beauty Collections, for lots of new variations.

With a purchase of any of these collections, you get Linda’s wonderful Sunflower Design Book for FREE! That is because the information in this Design Book is also applicable to the New York Wheel and New York Beauty patterns.

But Linda also came up with something completely new especially for the New York Wheel collection of shapes… a Mystery Quilt! This Mystery is called ‘The Case of the Secret Garden’ [COTSG].

For those who don’t know how a mystery quilt works, I will explain: Each week, Linda will give you a new clue/instruction for preparing or making a part of this small quilt (wallhanging). You follow the instructions without knowing what the end result will look like.

To make it even more exciting, Linda is combining the New York Wheel collection with the Free Inklingo Shape Collection for a 4.5 inch LeMoyne Star.

I am a little behind on this blog, because Linda has already released clue #1, the amount of fabric you need, and what to look for in your four fabrics (high contrast and non-directional prints). In the Inklingo Yahoo Group there are already quite a few enthusiastic participants, with pictures of their selected fabrics.

But there is still time to join! Look at all the pictures for inspiration, and dive in your own stash! Unfortunately I am not able to make the mystery quilt (at this moment), but I love seeing what everybody does with it.

After Ten Years…My First Quilt Finally Finished!

UFO wordt AFFO! Dat belooft wat voor de rest van 2013!

Na het afmaken van mijn vorige quiltje had ik gelijk zin om wat oude projecten af te maken. En daar moet je dan gebruik van maken, want meestal heb ik helemaal geen zin in oude projecten.

Ik heb dus mijn allereerste quilt (minstens tien jaren her) opgegraven. Het viel me mee hoe weinig ik er eigenlijk nog aan hoefde te doen, want het quilten was al bijna af.

Ik ben er jaren geleden uit frustratie mee opgehouden omdat het garen waarmee ik de effen sterren quiltte, steeds vastliep en brak. Het is ‘Glitter’ van Superior Threads, dat is een soort plastic lint met een hologramprint erop. Het geeft een prachtig effect, vooral onder lamplicht, maar mijn Bernina houdt er niet van. 

Deze quilt is heel bepalend geweest voor mijn ‘quiltloopbaan’. Ik vond het naaien met de hand heerlijk ontspannend, maar het tijdrovende malletjes maken, meten en aftekenen van de stof stomvervelend. Dat moest dus anders, en ik ben op zoek gegaan naar een betere methode. Van alles gelezen en gezien, maar niets dat het ei van Columbus was. Totdat ik Inklingo ontdekte! Briljant! 

Ik had verwacht dat ik het handquilten net zo ontspannend zou vinden als het handnaaien. Maar nee.

Alle quiltvingerhoeden op de Nederlandse markt bleken veel te klein! (Voor iemand van 1.64 meter met maat 36 heb ik kennelijk extreem grote handen.) De gekregen quiltring-op-standaard vond ik een onding, het gekozen katoenen quiltgaren (King Tut) saai, ik had het gevoel dat ik een slaapzak aan het naaien was, en ik brak mijn naalden steeds in tweeën.

Nadat ik drie blokken had gequilt en voor de zoveelste keer bijna een stuk naald in mijn oog had gekregen, was ik het zat, en heb ik de quilt een tijd weggelegd.

De zoektocht naar een andere manier van quilten ging o.a. via een workshop ‘machinaal quilten met de BSR’. En ook dat was liefde op het eerste gezicht. Dus op de beurs heb ik direct een van de gebruikte Bernina’s 440 QE met BSR gekocht. Het is mijn derde naaimachine, en ik ben er nog steeds dolblij mee.

De liefde voor Kaffe Fassett stoffen en quilts is ook een blijvende. Om de gebruikte stoffen allemaal op hun mooist te laten uitkomen heb ik de meeste stoffen rondom het dessin gequilt met de BSR. Zo hoefde ik ook niets af te tekenen. Alleen op de oranjige ‘gestreepte’ stof heb ik een schelpjespatroon afgetekend, met een sjabloon en gewone Hema-viltstift (wateruitwasbaar, dat had ik wel even getest).

En leuk om te weten: na 9,5 jaar plakt lijmspray 505 nog steeds! En ik heb geen tekenen gezien dat het de stof aantast ofzo, wat soms wel gezegd wordt. Het wast er ook gewoon nog uit.

Tijdens het quilten heb ik me flink uitgeleefd met allemaal verschillende garens en motieven, en dat was leuk!

Voor de afwerking heb ik geen bies aangezet, maar de achterkant van de quilt dubbelgevouwen, naar voren geslagen en met een decoratieve naaimachinesteek vastgezet. Dat was niet mijn slimste idee ooit. Het bobbelde natuurlijk, het transporteerde onregelmatig in de machine (zelfs met een loopvoetje). Daardoor bleek het onmogelijk om de decoratieve steek gelijkmatig te houden.

Maar goed, hij is af, hij is met fouten en al wel uniek, en ik vind hem nu ook weer mooi!

One UFO already finished! That is a great start of 2013!

After finishing my previous quilt, I felt like finishing some old projects. And when that hits, you have to take advantage of it, because I usually don’t feel like picking up old projects at all.

So I dug up my first quilt. I was pleasantly surprised to find how little work remained, because the quilting was almost finished.

I quit that years ago, frustrated with the thread I was using. It (‘Glitter’ by Superior Threads) kept getting stuck in the machine and breaking. It is a sort of plastic ribbon with a hologram print on it. It creates a great effect, especially under artificial light, but my Bernina does not like it.

This quilt was very important for my quilting choices afterwards. I loved hand piecing, but I found the time consuming making of templates, measuring and marking dead boring.

I had to find a different way, and started looking. I saw and read lots, but nothing seemed perfect. Until I discovered Inklingo! Brilliant!

I expected to find hand quilting as relaxing as handpiecing, but no. First, every single quilting thimble on the Dutch market proved much too small! (Apparently, for someone 5 feet and 11.5 inches tall, size 6, I have extreme large hands.)

The quilting hoop-on-stand that I got, did not work out, the chosen cotton quilt thread (King Tut) looked dull, I felt like I was sewing a sleeping bag, and I kept snapping needles in two. After quilting three blocks and almost getting another piece of flying needle in my eye, I had had enough. I put the quilt away for a few years.

My quest for a different way to quilt passed me through a workshop ‘machine quilting with the BSR’. And that too, was love at first sight! So I bought one of the used Bernina’s 440 QE with BSR on the spot. It is my third sewing machine, and I still love it to bits.

The love for Kaffe Fassett fabrics and quilts is also a lasting one. To showcase the fabrics I quilted most of them around the print, with the BSR. That saved me some marking, too. Only on the orange-like ‘striped’ fabric I marked a clamshell quilting pattern with a template and an ordinary felt tip pen. (Wash-away, I  did test it).

Nice to know: even after 9.5 years, glue-basting spray 505 still sticks! And I saw no signs that it would harm the fabric or anything, as is sometimes said. And it still comes out completely with washing.

With quilting, I played around with many different threads and motifs, and that was fun!

The edge was not finished with a binding, I just folded the backing double and over to the front. I stitched it down with a decorative machine stitch. That was not my brightest idea ever. Of course it puckered, and it fed unevenly through the machine, even with a walking foot. So it was impossible to keep the decorative stitching even.

But hey, it is finished, with mistakes and all it’s unique, and now I like it again!

Eagle Mini Quilt Finished

Ja, lieve mensen, aan het eind van 2012 heb ik dan toch nog net weer een quiltje afgekregen! Het is weer een miniquiltje voor mijn vader geworden, net zoals dit quiltje uit juni.

Dit ontwerp heb ik in juli gemaakt voor mijn vader, en hij vond het prachtig. Ik voelde me een beetje schuldig omdat ik niet van plan was de quilt te maken, en ik mijn vader niet graag teleurstel.

Dus ik heb er iets op bedacht. Ik wilde al lange tijd eens stof ontwerpen en digitaal laten drukken door Spoonflower. Dit leek me nu het perfecte project. Vanuit EQ7 heb ik de afbeelding geëxporteerd en ge-upload naar Spoonflower.com, en die 1x laten printen op een fat quarter katoenen satijn, en daar een klein (35 x 35 cm.) ‘cheater’ quiltje van gemaakt.

Mijn hand naast ongeveer een kwart van het quiltje geeft aan hoe klein het is.

Ik heb alle lijnen van het ontwerp doorgestikt op de naaimachine met een loopvoetje, zoals je bij een patchworktop in de naad zou quilten. De quilt is klein genoeg om hem gemakkelijk te draaien, dus quilten in alle richtingen was geen probleem.

Dit project heb ik beschouwd als een ‘proeflap’, en ik had mezelf vooraf beloofd dat ik geen enkele steek zou uithalen! Dat heb ik dan ook niet gedaan, maar met die korte naadjes stik je zo te ver door! Er zitten dus vrij opvallende foutjes in het quiltwerk.

Ik kwam er ook achter dat het maar 1x printen van de top op stof wel lekker goedkoop is, maar dat je dan geen steken en garenkleuren kunt testen op de gekleurde stof.

Voor het quilten heb ik verschillende garens gebruikt die ik in huis had (allemaal van Superior Threads). Ik ben begonnen met ‘onzichtbaar’ MonoPoly garen, maar de heldere variant die ik heb, stak te glimmend af bij de donkere kleuren van de top. (Ondertussen heb ik de donkere kleur onzichtbaar garen ook maar in huis gehaald).

Daarna heb ik alle ‘naden’ doorgestikt met de dunne garens the Bottom Line, Masterpiece en Kimono Silk. In het spoeltje heb ik the Bottom Line in creme gebruikt. Ik vond het te veel gedoe om de onderdraad steeds hetzelfde te nemen als de bovendraad.

Het etiket doet dienst als ophangtunnel

Maar bij het quilten om de rode driehoekjes heen kwam op de punten steeds de onderdraad naar boven. Ondanks extra steken voor het draaien en na het draaien kon ik dat niet voorkomen.

Totdat ik een ‘Little Genie Magic Bobbin Washer’ in mijn spoelhulsje deed! De onderdraad maakte geen lusjes meer. Echt ongelooflijk wat een verschil zo’n klein plastic rondje maakt! Ik hoefde ook geen extra steken meer te maken voor en na elke draai, dus het quilten ging vanaf toen een stuk sneller.

Na wat puzzelen op papier had ik een doorlopend pad gevonden rondom alle rode driehoekjes, zodat ik achter elkaar door kon stikken met dezelfde draad.

Het doorstikken rondom de Arenden heb ik tot het laatst bewaard. Met het zweet in mijn handen en een bonzend hart heb ik besloten ze met afstekend, dikker, glanzend garen met een kleurverloop (Rainbows garen) te quilten. Ook dat heb ik met het loopvoetje gedaan, en dus niet uit de vrije hand met de BSR.

Ik heb een speciale, bijzonder hoogstaande techniek gebruikt om ook de vleugeluiteinden en klauwtjes netjes door te stikken: Draaien aan het handwiel om de naald op en neer te bewegen, en zo steekje voor steekje precies uitkienen waar de naald terechtkomt, met de tong uit de mond. (Dat laatste is uiteraard heel bepalend voor het eindresultaat).;-)

Nou, echt snel ging dit ‘snelle projectje’ op deze manier natuurlijk nog steeds niet, maar het is veelzeggend dat het wel helemaal af is. 

Op het etiket heb ik de betekenis van het ontwerp uitgelegd, met een plaatje van de quilt. (Ik hoop dat je het kunt lezen op de foto, klik er eventueel op voor een vergroting).

Het etiket heb ik zelf geprint op een katoenen EQ printable (Premium Cotton Lawn, Quilt-Weight Fabric). Daar heb ik al vaker mee gewerkt, en een nadeel van deze stof is dat het een beetje stijf is en scherp kreukt (ook na het uitspoelen).

Spoonflower stof is veel soepeler, zoals gewone stof. Ik heb de top gewassen voor ik hem sandwichte, en het quiltje heb ik ook nog eens gewassen. De kleuren bleven helemaal goed.

Ik vond het zeker voor herhaling vatbaar. Mijn favoriete onderdelen van quiltmaken zijn het ontwerpen en het quilten, en de rest vind ik eigenlijk helemaal niet leuk. (Stof aaien en kopen beschouw ik als een hobby op zich .)

Ik wacht nu met smart op de dag dat je bij Spoonflower je quilt-sandwich in elke gewenste grootte kunt laten bedrukken!

Yes, dear quilty folks, by the end of 2012 I have another small quilt finished! Another mini quilt for my Dad, just like this one from June.

I designed this in July for my Dad, and he loved it. I felt a bit guilty because I had no intention of making the quilt, and I hate disappointing my Dad. So I found a way.

I had been wanting to design fabric and have it printed digitally by Spoonflower. This seemed like the perfect project. So I exported the quilt image from EQ7 and uploaded it to Spoonflower.com, and had it printed 1x on a fat quarter of cotton sateen. I turned that into a small (13.8 x 13.8 inches) cheater quilt.

My hand next to about a quarter of the quilt shows the small size.

I machine stitched over all the lines of the design, using a walking foot, like you would quilt a patchwork top in the ditch. The quilt is small enough to turn easily, so quilting in all directions was no problem. I considered this project a testing sample, and beforehand I promised myself I would not rip out a single stitch! So I didn’t, but with these very short lines, you easily take one stitch too many! So there are some visible quilting mistakes.

I discovered that printing the design only once on a small piece of fabric may be nice and cheap, but it leaves you with no chance to test your stitching and thread colors on the colored fabric.

For the quilting I used several different threads from my stash (all by Superior Threads). I started with ‘invisible’ MonoPoly thread, but the clear color I have was too shiny on the dark colors of the top. (By now, I have the darker color ‘Smoke’).

So from then on I stitched the ‘seams’ with the thin threads The Bottom Line, MasterPiece and Kimono Silk. In the bobbin I used The Bottom Line in cream. I thought it was too much fuss to match the bobbin to every different top thread.

But while quilting around the red triangles, the bobbin thread pulled up at each turn. I could not prevent the bobbin thread showing up, even with extra stitches before and after pivoting. Until I put a ‘Little Genie Magic Bobbin Washer’ in the bobbin case! No more bobbin thread on the front.

Amazing, the difference that small plastic ring makes! I did not have to take extra stitches anymore around each turn, so quilting went a lot quicker after that. After a little puzzling on paper I found a continuous path around all red triangles, allowing me to stitch a big chunk with only one thread.

The quilted outlines around the Eagles I saved till the very last. With sweaty palms and a beating heart I decided to stitch them with bright, shiny, thicker thread with color changes (Rainbows Thread). I did that with the walking foot as well, not free motioning with the BSR.

I used a very special, highly sophisticated technique to make sure the quilting around the tips of the wings and the claws would end up neat, too: Turning the handwheel to move the needle up and down, thus targeting the impact of the needle exactly, with tongue hanging out of mouth. (The latter is a determining factor for the end result, of course)

This way, this ‘quick project’ did not progress so quickly after all, but it says a lot that it is actually finished.

The label doubles as a hanging sleeve

On the label I explained the design. It says:  

Mini quilt ‘for Arend’ [Arend means Eagle in Dutch, it is my Dad's name).

Designed for my Dad, Arend de Weerdt, in the 'Birds' themed July 2012 Club EQ Challenge.

The blocks used are classic quilt blocks that are in the quilt design software EQ7 and have 'bird' in the block name:

• I put 'Birds in the Air' blocks in a star layout.
• In the corners are 'Bird's Nest' blocks.
• On the foreground are five Eagle motifs.

The star depicts the power of the Eagle, against a dark sky.

The total design symbolizes my father Arend [Eagle] and his five adult children, in whom Arend lives on.

I printed the label on an EQ printable (Premium Cotton Lawn, Quilt-Weight fabric). I have worked with these before, and a disadvantage of this fabric is that it is a bit stiff, and creases very sharply (also after rinsing or washing).

Spoonflower fabric is softer and drapes better, just like regular fabric. I washed the top before I made the quilt sandwich, and I washed the finished quilt again. The colors remained perfect.

I think I will make quilts like this more often. My favorite parts of quilt making are the designing and the quilting, and I don’t like the rest very much at all. (Patting and buying fabrics I consider a hobby in itself .)

So now I am eagerly awaiting the day one can order a printed quilt sandwich from Spoonflower!

De alweer laatste  Club EQ Challenge voor 2012 had als thema ‘Flower Pots’, Bloempotten. Ik heb een foto van een antieke Nederlandse vaas overgetrokken met Patch Draw en er fantasiebloemen in getekend.

Ik heb deze blokken horizontaal gebruikt en op de punt in twee verschillende quiltontwerpen. Ik heb ze ingekleurd met stoffen. De plaatjes staan hieronder, onder ‘Engels’.

Already the last Club EQ Challenge for 2012, was themed ‘Flowerpots’. I traced a picture of an antique Dutch vase in Patch Draw, and added fantasy flowers.

I used this block horizontal and on point in two quilt designs. Both are colored with fabrics.
