Een terugblik op 2012

Ik wil nog even stilstaan bij 2012, een bijzonder jaar voor mij. Ik heb weer veel geleerd en inspiratie opgedaan voor quilts. Hoogtepunten, bijzonderheden en belangrijkste inspiraties van 2012:

• Mijn eerste collectie patronen voor quiltblokken voor ‘My EQ Boutique‘.
• Een reis naar Canada
• Een weekendbezoek met mijn moeder aan het quiltfestival in Groningen
• Deelname aan een internationale vriendinnenquilt
• 

  Back of the Block – Achterkant van het Blok

  Deelname aan de Inklingo/EQ quiltontwerpwedstrijd ‘Love the Lines’

• Betalend lid geworden van ‘The Quilt Show’
• Abonnement genomen op tijdschrift Quiltmania
• Eerste keer Spoonflower stof laten bedrukken
• Twee (piep)kleine quilts gemaakt
• Begonnen met het afmaken van een belangrijke UFO
• Alle maandelijkse Club EQ Challenges
• 25 nieuwe Inklingo-collecties patroondelen om te printen op stof, en 2 nieuwe Design Books van Linda Franz
• Bereiken van 50.000 bezoekjes [views] aan mijn blog (sinds de start), uit 97 landen in 2012.

Over een heleboel van deze dingen heb ik nog niet eerder geschreven! Daarom hieronder alsnog wat plaatjes.

Ik wil iedereen bedanken die belangrijk voor me is geweest in 2012. Ten eerste moet ik Linda Franz bedanken. Zij was betrokken bij de beide absolute hoogtepunten van het jaar:

Dat ik mijzelf nu een professionele quiltontwerper mag noemen (niet dat ik er van kan leven ofzo).

Ik ben dankbaar voor alle steun en aanmoediging die ik heb ontvangen, van Linda, van Sara Seuberling en Penny McMorris van the Electric Quilt Company/My EQ Boutique, en natuurlijk van iedereen die mijn blokken heeft gekocht! Dus allemaal heel erg bedankt.

Ik hoop dat jullie quilters daar blij zijn met de patronen en er iets moois van maken.

Ook wil ik graag EQ Goeroe Barb Vlack bedanken voor alle maandelijkse Club EQ Challenges. Ik heb er veel van geleerd en op die manier heeft Barb ook een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan mijn ontwikkeling tot My EQ Boutique-ontwerper.

Het tweede hoogtepunt was onze fantastische reis door Canada, en dan speciaal de tijd die we hebben doorgebracht met Linda, Monkey en Russ! We hebben Linda’s prijswinnende quilts gezien en met Monkey geknuffeld! Het was onze eerste keer in Canada, maar hopelijk niet de laatste!

En met haar niet aflatende stroom van nieuwe Inklingo collecties patroondelen, prachtige Design Books en de ontwerpwedstrijd ‘Love the Lines’ heeft Linda mij weer veel inspiratie gegeven om quilts te ontwerpen.

Lang niet alle ideeën heb ik uitgewerkt, en lang niet alles komt hier op Stof Genoeg, dus wat jullie hier hebben gezien is maar het topje van de ijsberg.

Op de stoep bij Stychen Time, de plaatselijke quiltwinkel in Jasper. Deze winkel ligt dus midden in een National Park! (In de Rocky Mountains)

We zagen boven de prairie prachtige wolkenluchten. Het deed ons denken aan Nederland, maar dan anders

Back of the Block

I would like to take a moment to think back on 2012, a special year for me. Once more, I learned a lot and got a lot of inspiration for quilts. Highlights, specifics and major inspirations of 2012:

• My first collection of block patterns for ’My EQ Boutique‘.
• A trip to Canada
• 
• A weekend trip with my Mum to the quilt festival in Groningen
• Participating in an international friendship quilt
• Participating in the Inklingo/EQ quilt design contest ‘Love the Lines’
• Star membership of ‘The Quilt Show’
• Subscribing to Quiltmania magazine
• Having my first Spoonflower fabric printed
• Finishing two small (tiny) quilts
• Starting the finishing of an important UFO
• All monthly Club EQ Challenges
• 25 new Inklingo collections of shapes to print on fabric, and 2 new Design Books by Linda Franz
• Reaching 50.000 views of my blog (since start), from 97 countries in 2012.

I have not written about many of these events before. So to make it up, you will find some pictures in this post.

I want to thank everyone that has been important to me in 2012. 

First and foremost I need to thank Linda Franz. She was involved in the two absolute highlights of the year:

New Designer for My EQ Boutique!

That I can call myself a professional quilt designer now (not that I can make my living from quilt design).

I am grateful for all the support and encouragement that I received, from Linda, from Sara Seuberling and Penny McMorris from the Electric Quilt Company/My EQ Boutique, and of course from everybody that bought my blocks! Many thanks to all of you!

I hope you quilters out there are happy with the blocks and make them into something beautiful.

I want to thank EQ Guru Barb Vlack as well, for all of her monthly Club EQ Challenges. I learned a lot from them and in that way Barb contributed greatly to my  development into a My EQ Boutique designer.

The second highlight was our trip through Canada, and most of all the time we spent with Linda, Monkey and Russ! We saw Linda’s award winning quilts and hugged Monkey! It was our first time in Canada, but hopefully not our last!

And with her never ending current of new Inklingo shape collections, beautiful Design Books and the quilt design contest ‘Love the Lines’, Linda once more provided great inspirations to design quilts.

I have not nearly drawn all of my ideas, and not nearly all of what I draw ends up here on Stof Genoeg, so what you have gotten to see is just the tip of the iceberg.

Het is woensdag, dus hier is de uitslag van de verloting voor Quilt & Zo nr. 11. Ik heb 16 reacties gehad (dubbele niet meegerekend). Bedankt voor jullie reacties aan het lijstje namen hierboven.

New glasses – Nieuwe bril

Hoe vind je mijn nieuwe bril? (Om je geheugen op te frissen: hier kun je de vorige nog zien.) Ik had nieuwe glazen nodig (voor het eerst multifocaal, kassa!), dus meteen maar een nieuw montuur aangeschaft. Na een liefdesaffaire van zo’n 15 jaar met Theo ben ik hem nu voor het eerst ontrouw. Het is een ander merk montuur geworden. De Theomodellen scoorden weer hoge ogen, maar ik wilde eens een heel ander kleurtje dan het bruin/paars/roze/rood wat ik al zeker 15 jaar op mijn neus heb. Het nieuwe model bril heet Tour de Friends, en dat vindt DHDH als wielerfanaat natuurlijk prachtig.

Om Theo te troosten draag ik nog wel steeds zijn zonnebril (model Azizi). Ik heb hem denk ik al wel 10 jaar, en ik krijg er nog steeds complimenten over, en vind hem zelf ook nog geweldig. Ik weet alleen niet of daar wel multifocale glazen in passen. Voorlopig doe ik het nog maar met de oude glazen.

Waar in elk geval geen multifocale glazen inpassen, is een van mijn favoriete ‘oude’ Theo monturen, de Tibetan. Deze bril is supergrappig, in de vorm van oogjes en wenkbrauwen! Een plaatje vind je hier. Maar voor mij nu dus een iets serieuzer modelletje, om een nieuwe levensfase onder ogen te zien. Snif…;-)

How do you like my new glasses? (To refreshen your memory, here you can still see my previous glasses.) I needed new lenses (multifocals for the first time, expensive!) so I bought a new frame to put them in. After a 15 or so year love affair with Theo, I am going astray for the first time. I chose a frame from a different designer. The Theo models were high on my list, but I decided to go for a completely different color than the brown/purple/pink/red that I sported on my nose for 15 years. The new model glasses is named Tour de Friends, and cycling fanatic DHDH loves it! To console Theo, I will keep wearing his sunglasses (model Azizi, scroll up a bit for a picutre). I think I have got it for ten years, and I still get compliments about it, and I still think it is fabulous, too. But I am not sure I can have multifocals in it. So for now I will just wear it with the old lenses.

A model that will definitely not accommodate multifocals is one of my favorite ‘old’ Theo frames, the Tibetan. This one is superfun, in the shape of eyes and eyebrows! You can find a picture here. But for me, the outlook on a new phase in life will be framed by something a bit more serious. Snif…;-)

Op een mooie lentedag

Ik ben vandaag gaan wandelen in het park met mijn vader, en liet hem daar een heel toepasselijk liedje horen. Hij vond het, net als ik, Mooi!

En dat vindt Maarten van Roozendaal, de zanger/auteur zelf kennelijk ook, want zo heeft hij dit meesterwerkje meteen maar genoemd. Ik geef jullie hier de tekst en daaronder kun je een video vinden waarop hij het uitvoert. Om keihard uit de ramen te laten schallen op een prachtige lentedag zoals vandaag.

On a beautiful spring day…
For all of you who are curious about how Dutch sounds, I am presenting you one of my all time favorite Dutch singer/songwriters. He has written a song about Spring. I am giving the Dutch lyrics above the video in which he performs it.  The song is called ‘Beautiful’ and it is just that. Perfect for a day like today.

Because the lyrics above are very poetic, there is no way I could translate them and do the author, singer/songwriter Maarten van Roozendaal, justice. But, I also found another video of one of his beautiful songs, which happens to have English subtitles. Not great (the translation), but I thought you might like it anyway.

Great hats on show in Antwerp

Today DHDH took a day off to go shopping during the Sale in Antwerp. Yes, that is his idea of fun . I do not like shopping outdoors very much, and certainly not during sale. But I went along with him, because there was an exhibition in the Fashion Museum (MoMu) that I wanted to see, Stephen Jones & The Accent of Fashion. Stephen Jones has been making fabulous hats for over 30 years, and the exhibition has about 120 on show.

I had never been to the MoMu before, and I did not like it very much (Professional deformation: I studied Museology and must admit that I am very critical about exhibitions and museums), but the hats were to die for! I found this culmination of creativity, craftmanship and taste very inspiring. I would just love to be able to wear one of this milliner’s miniature hats some day, at some occasion. (I’d probably have to join a circus to make it look appropriate on me ;-)).

Unfortunately I did not bring my camera, so I can’t show you a picture here. If you are curious what I am talking about, you will have to go look at the hats yourself, either in real life or online.

The exhibition is still on until 13 February 2011. If you are not able to visit Antwerp, you can look at the creations of Stephen Jones on his website, and also in the online collection catalog of the MoMu, which uses a confusing mixture of Flamish and English.

Vandaag had De Heer Des Huizes een dagje vrij genomen om te gaan winkelen tijdens de uitverkoop in Antwerpen. Ja, dat vindt ‘ie leuk . Ik houd helemaal niet zo van winkelen, zeker niet als ik er de deur voor uit moet, en al helemáál niet tijdens de uitverkoop. Maar ik ben meegegaan, omdat er een tentoonstelling was in het Mode Museum (MoMu) die ik wilde zien, Stephen Jones &  Het Accent op Mode. Stephen Jones maakt al meer dan 30 jaar fantastische hoeden, en de tentoonstelling laat er ca. 120 zien.

Ik was nog nooit in het MoMu geweest, en ik vond het op zich niet geweldig (Beroepsdeformatie: ik heb Museologie gestudeerd en moet toegeven dat ik ook wel erg kritisch ben op tentoonstellingen en musea), maar de hoeden waren om te zoenen! Ik vond deze samenkomst van creativiteit, vakmanschap en smaak erg inspirerend. Ik zou dolgraag bij gelegenheid eens een miniatuurhoedje van deze hoedenmaker willen (kunnen) dragen. (Al moet ik waarschijnlijk bij het circus gaan om het toepasselijk te laten lijken ).

Helaas hadden we geen camera meegebracht, dus ook geen foto’s op mijn blog. DHDH vond dat ook wel jammer, want toen we na afloop in een café zaten uit te puffen, schoof de lieftallige Kim Holland aan een tafeltje dichtbij, vol in zijn blikveld. Hij had best met haar op de foto gewild…We zijn dus met lege handen thuisgekomen, maar we hadden allebei toch een heel geslaagde dag .

De tentoonstelling is nog open tot 13 februari 2011. Als je gelegenheid hebt kan ik je dit echt aanraden! Een alternatief is het bekijken van Stephen Jones’ creaties op zijn website, en ook in de online collectiecatalogus van het MoMu, dat een verwarrende mix van Vlaams en Engels gebruikt. Maar als je een beetje leest en doorklikt kom je er vast wel uit.

2010 Is almost over. It has been a special year for me. I have been unable to do any quilting or sewing due to tennis and golfers elbow, but I have found another creative outlet; this blog. I want to thank all of you, my readers, for making this more fun than I anticipated. I have readers, and I get positive comments! Wow!

I especially want to thank the members of the Inklingo Yahoo Group for being there, so warm and friendly, encouraging me and offering me support. It means a lot to me, cause it allows me to still feel part of the quilting community when I am unable to actually do any quilting. Most of all, I want to thank Linda Franz, the inventor (awarded with a patent!) of Inklingo, and the one who started the Inklingo Yahoo Group. We have never met, but I consider her a great friend. She has been very generous to all of us Inklingoists, but especially to me, and she is the one who pushed me to start this blog. Thank you, thank you!

And I am wishing you all a very happy, healthy and successful 2011!

2010 Is bijna voorbij. Het was een bijzonder jaar voor mij. Ik heb het hele jaar niet kunnen quilten of naaien door een tennis- en golferselleboog, maar ik heb een andere creatieve uitlaatklep gevonden: dit blog. Ik wil jullie, mijn lezers, allemaal bedanken omdat het leuker is geworden dan ik vooraf gedacht had. Ik heb lezers, en ik krijg positieve reacties! Wauw!

Ik wil vooral de leden van de Inklingo Yahoo Groep bedanken, omdat ze er altijd zijn, warm en vriendschappelijk, omdat ze me aanmoedigen en steunen. Dat betekent veel voor me, omdat ik me daardoor nog steeds lid voel van de quiltgemeenschap, terwijl ik toch zelf niet kan quilten. Ik wil vooral Linda Franz bedanken, de uitvindster (met octrooi!) van Inklingo, en degene die de Inklingo Yahoo groep is begonnen. We hebben elkaar nog nooit ontmoet, maar ik beschouw haar als een geweldige vriendin. Ze is erg vrijgevig geweest voor al ons Inklingoïsten, maar vooral voor mij, en zij is degene die me gepusht heeft om dit blog te beginnen. Dankjewel, dankjewel!

Ik wens jullie allemaal een heel gelukkig, gezond en succesvol 2011!

Vol verwachting klopt ons hart…

Ik ben dol op Sinterklaas! Niet alleen op de goedheiligman zelf, maar vooral op het spannende kinderfeest met kadootjes, snoep, en gedichten. Ik vind het veel leuker dan Kerst. Om een beetje in de sfeer te komen heb ik mijn header aangepast en voorzien van kruidnootjes, een chocoladeletter en fondantletters (en de rekwisieten vervolgens opgesmikkeld).

Kadotip
Wist je dat er Inklingo-kadobonnen zijn? Leuk voor op je verlanglijstje of om kado te geven aan een quilter. (Je kunt ze overigens ook aan Linda Franz’ Quilted Diamonds besteden). Dit is ook een handige omweg voor als je iets wilt bestellen van www.inklingo.com maar zelf niet over een credit card beschikt. Geef dan geld aan iemand met een credit card om voor jou een Inklingo kadobon te bestellen. Je kunt de kadobonnen bestellen voor elk gewenst bedrag in US dollars, en hij wordt per e-mail verzonden, dus je hebt hem snel. Je kunt kadobonnen op naam van de gever krijgen, maar ook anoniem, dus helemaal in de Sinterklaasgedachte. Sommige mensen vinden kadobonnen een flauw kado, maar ik houd wel van een goedgekozen kadobon. Ik vind het een echt kado, mét de voorpret van het uitzoeken voor de ontvanger. (Ik hoop dat Sinterklaas dit leest ).

Inklingo kadobon - Inklingo gift certificate

 

It is that special time of year. Sinterklaas Eve is drawing near…In the Netherlands it is the traditional present giving occasion, like Christmas is in many other countries. I love Sinterklaas! Not just the man himself, but especially the exciting children’s feast with present, traditional candy and verses. I much prefer it to Christmas. To get into the spirit I have adorned my header image with traditional Sinterklaas candy: a chocolate letter, kruidnootjes (like tiny ginger bread cookies), and fondant letters (and afterwards ate the props).

Holiday tip
Did you know there are Inklingo /Quilted Diamonds gift certificates? You can put them on your own wish list or give them to a quilter. You can also use them as a workaround in case you want to order something from www.inklingo.com but don’t have a credit card. Give your money to someone with a credit card to buy a gift certificate for you. Gift certificates are available in any amount in US dollars, and it is sent to you by e-mail, so you will have it very quickly. The name of the donor can be on the certificate, or they can be made anonymously. Some people don’t like (to give) gift certificates, but I like a well chosen gift certificate. To me it is a real present, with all the joyful anticipation of choosing for the recipient. (I hope Sinterklaas reads this )

More about Sinterklaas
Nowadays many people do give presents at Christmas, mainly because they think Sinterklaas is too much trouble. You can’t just wrap a gift and put it under a tree. No, you have to make a verse to go with it, or wrap it in a crafty way, like making the present into a paper Sinterklaas doll. The present is given out of the name of Sinterklaas, so effectively anonymous. This gives you the chance to friendly mock the recipient with the present, the verse and the wrapping.

Luckily, you don’t have to do this for every one. Most groups that celebrate Sinterklaas together, draw tickets with names (and wish lists) written inside. You can do this electronically nowadays. That saves you the trouble of doing it over and over again, when someone draws his own name. (Usually the last person to take a ticket ). You only have to shop and craft for the one person on your ticket, and often a small budget for the present is agreed. So it is very much about being creative. You have to think of a good gift inside the budget, and preferably make a fun verse, that the recipient has to read out loud to everyone, before opening the package. In my family everyone, even most in-laws, are really good at making verses, so that was always great fun (and a very long evening!). Now that all my siblings have children, the family has grown too big to celebrate it with three generations together, if we don’t want it to last until the following morning.

Since so much candy is involved, most families have a heavy meal on Saint Nicholas Eve, something you know the children will love, in the hope they’ll go easy on the candy. Afterwards, when the curtains are drawn and a cd with Sinterklaas songs is on, the fun begins. If there are small children who still believe Sinterklaas really exists, families usually arrange for someone to knock heavily on the windows or the door. When the children jump up from their seats, a mysterious black gloved hand comes through a door and throws special ‘throwing candy’ (the kruidnootjes from the header image, mixed with other candy) around the room. When everyone jumps to the candy, somebody puts a large bag filled with presents in the hallway or on the doorstep.

Usually the smallest kid gets to pick a present, and give it to the person whose name is written on it. She or he then reads the verse aloud and unwraps. Next the first recipient picks the second present. Etc. It is tradition that everyone (even if you have not been very good in the past year) receives a chocolate letter, the first letter of your name. Exceptions are made for Isabel, Ivan and Irma if they are fond of chocolate . Then it can be the first letter of their last name, an M for Mom, D for Dad, S from Sinterklaas, or something else. To receive a Q for Quilter is not very likely, Q’s, X’s and Z’s are hard to find.

Ik aan het bloggen – Me blogging

Ik had nog een vierkant plaatje nodig om mijn blog en mijzelf te ‘representeren’. Dat heb ik gisteren zelf maar getekend, geheel digitaal, op mijn Wacom Bamboo tablet met tekenpen, dat ik meestal gebruik in plaats van een muis. Vooral voor het tekenen in EQ7 is dat handiger. Bij het tablet zat (o.a.) het programma ArtRage, en daarmee kun je realistisch schilderen en tekenen. En het gekke is: dat doe ik met rechts! (Echt schrijven en tekenen, voor zover ik dat ooit nog doe, doe ik met links). En nee, ik heb niet echt zes vingers aan mijn rechterhand …

I still needed a square picture to represent my blog and me. So I drew that myself yesterday, digitally, on my Wacom Bamboo tablet with pen, which I usually use instead of a mouse. Especially for drawing in EQ7 that is much handier. With the tablet came (a.o.) the program ArtRage, and with that you can paint and draw realistically. And the funny thing is: I do that with my right hand! (I do real writing and drawing, if ever, with my left hand). And no, I don’t really have six fingers on my right hand )
