‘De Nederlandse vrouw is als een Hollandse tomaat: ze ziet er aantrekkelijk uit, ze is lang houdbaar, maar ze smaakt en ruikt nergens naar.’ Dit citaat is van een buitenlandse man uit Santje Kramer’s boek ‘Het Poldermodel’, over de eigengereidheid van de Nederlandse vrouw. De tomaat, Hollandse Hap van april, is misschien niet helemaal een ‘Dutch Delight’, maar het is wel een mooi plaatje.
Zelf at ik zelden smakeloze kastomaten. Mijn vader verbouwde zelf tomaten op zijn volkstuin, en in de zomer hielp ik soms met het ‘dieven’ van de planten. Dat vond ik wel leuk, want de geur van tomatengroen is heerlijk. Wist je dat dat zelfs in parfum wordt verwerkt?
Als ik ‘Folavril’ (van Annick Goutal) ruik, een fris parfum met tomatengroen, denk ik aan mijn vader, werkend op de donkere zware zeebodemklei die is doorspikkeld met schelpen, waaruit hij allemaal gezonde, onbespoten heerlijkheden voor ons toverde. En geloof me, zo ruikt een Nederlandse vrouw verrukkelijk!
Het Tomato-blokje uit de vorige post heb ik op een iets andere manier gemaakt dan de andere blokken. Ik laat hier mijn werkwijze zien.
De cirkel heb ik op dezelfde manier gemaakt als alle eerdere cirkels. Het kroontje is ook weer een patroondeel dat zonder naadafwerking en met vliesofix is vastgestreken. Maar omdat de rand van de tomaat met de gerimpelde naadtoeslag eronder nogal dik was, kon ik het kroontje met vliesofix niet mooi plat vaststrijken op de achtergrond.

Daarom heb ik de naadtoeslag van de rode cirkel weggeknipt waar het kroontje de rand bedekt. Na het verwijderen van de mal uit de cirkel heb ik met behulp van het patroon het kroontje, met opgestreken vliesofix met het papier er nog aan, op de juiste plek gelegd, en aan de voorkant van de cirkel afgetekend tot waar ik de naadtoeslag kon wegknippen.

Tussen de lijntjes heb ik de naadtoeslag weggeknipt, over de gestreken ‘vouw’. Met behulp van een appliquélijmpen heb ik de overgebleven naadtoeslag weer netjes onder de cirkel gelijmd. Doordat ik een deel had weggeknipt, kon ik hem namelijk niet meer straktrekken met de achtergebleven rijgdraad.
Vervolgens heb ik het papier van het kroontje afgehaald, en het kroontje met een puntje van mijn strijkbout vastgezet op de cirkel, zo dat het stukje ‘rafelrand’ van de tomaat helemaal bedekt was door het kroontje.

Daarna heb ik de tomaat, met behulp van het patroon en tegenlicht achter de stof, op de juiste plaats op de achtergrond gelijmd met appliquélijm. Toen kon ik het kroontje netjes plat vaststrijken, over de achtergrond en de tomaat.
Zoals bij alle voorgaande blokken heb ik de rand van de tomaat met een smalle zigzag op de machine vastgezet met onzichtbaar garen. Maar nu niet helemaal rondom, maar alleen tussen de buitenste blaadjes van de kroon.
Het kroontje heb ik met groen garen duidelijk zichtbaar meerdere keren doorgestikt, vlak langs de rand en ook over de blaadjes en de aanzet van de steel. De kleur, steeklengte en draadspanning heb ik eerst even getest op een snippertje van de groene stof, met vliesofix vastgestreken op de rand van de achtergrondstof.

Daarna heb ik ‘Tomato’ er vanaf de achterkant, over de tekst op het spiegelbeeldige patroon, uit de vrije hand machinaal op geborduurd.
En kijk, een smaakvolle, helemaal zelf geproduceerde tomaat! Zo vader, zo dochter

‘The Dutch woman is like a tomato from Holland: she looks appealing, she preserves well, but tastes and smells of nothing.’ This quote (by a foreign man) comes from Santje Kramer’s book ‘Het Poldermodel’ [The polder model], about the obstinacy of the Dutch woman. So maybe the Dutch Tomato is not quite a Dutch Delight, but it makes a pretty picture.
I seldom had tasteless greenhouse tomatoes. My father grew his own tomatoes in his allotment garden. I sometimes helped him with ‘pinching and pruning’ the plants. I liked that job, because the smell of tomato leaves is delicious. Did you know it is even used in perfume?
Whenever I smell ‘Folavril’ (by Annick Goutal), a fresh perfume with tomato leaf, I think of my father, working the dark heavy sea bottom clay that is speckled with white shells, and from which he magically pulled lots of organic, healthy, yummy things for us. And believe me, a Dutch woman smells delicious when she smells like that!
I made the Tomato block from the previous post slightly differently, compared to the other blocks. I am showing you pictures of how I did it.
I made the circle in the same way as all previous circles. The crown is a raw-edge fused appliqué patch again. But because the edge of the tomato with the gathered seam allowance underneath was a bit thick, I was unable to press the crown flat to the background.

That is why I cut away the seam allowance of the red circle, where the crown covers the edge. After removing the template from the circle, I used the pattern to put the crown, with fusible web with paper still attached, in the right spot on the circle, and marked the circle on the right side of the fabric, where I could trim off the seam allowance.

I cut between the marks, along the pressed crease. Using an appliqué glue pen I glue basted the remaining seam allowance back neatly under the circle. This was necessary because after removing part of the seam allowance, I could no longer gather the seam allowance tightly with the remaining basting thread.
Next, I removed the paper from the fusible web, and used the tip of a hot iron to fix the crown in the right position on the tomato. I made sure the piece of raw edge of the tomato was completely covered by the crown.
Then, I glue basted the tomato in place on the background, with the backlighted pattern behind the background fabric as a guideline. And now I was able to fuse the crown neatly flat to both the background fabric and the tomato.
Just like with all previous blocks, I appliquéd the red patch by machine, with a narrow zigzag stitch, using invisible thread. Only this time, I did not go all the way around, but started and stopped at the outer green leaves.

I stitched the crown down visibly with green thread, making several lines, not just close to the edges, but also over the centers of the leaves and the beginning of the stem. I tested the color, stitch length and tension first, on a small scrap of green fabric, fused to the edge of the background fabric.
After that, I did the word ‘Tomato’ from the backside, over the text on the mirror image pattern, with free motion machine embroidery.
And look, a tasteful, completely homegrown tomato! Like father, like daughter
