Vrolijk Kerstfeest!

Na mijn posts met de 8 inch [20,3 cm.] Inklingo Clamshell Rose blokken, en de 16 inch [40,6 cm.] Inklingo Clamshell Rose blokken, wilde ik jullie ook nog mijn quiltontwerpen met de 12 inch [30,5 cm.] Inklingo Clamshell Rose blokken laten zien. Dus, hier komen ze!

Voor de duidelijkheid, deze blokken gebruiken allemaal een en dezelfde (maat) Inklingo collectie patroondelen, nl. de Clamshell Rose 4 inch. Beetje verwarrend inderdaad, maar dit dus zo’n veelzijdige collectie dat je er allerlei blokken met verschillende afmetingen van kunt maken!

Omdat het nu al tegen Kerst loopt, heb ik ook maar Kerstversies gemaakt van mijn ontwerpen uit oktober, om de blog van vandaag wat Kerstsfeer te geven. In deze quilts heb ik de Clamshell Rose blokken gecombineerd met andere Inklingo blokken.

Zoals altijd met Inklingobare quiltontwerpen: Als je een afbeelding van de quilt hebt en de benodigde collecties patroondelen, kun je met alle informatie die Linda Franz je daarin geeft zelf min of meer je patroon schrijven door ‘Monkey’s Cheat Sheet’ (in elke collectie meegeleverd) in te vullen.

Dus dit is mijn Kerstkadootje voor jullie, twee Kerstquiltontwerpen die je met Inklingo eenvoudig na kunt maken.

In de quilt bovenaan deze post heb ik vijf 12 inch Waltzing Matilda blokken toegevoegd. Het middendeel met de blokken meet 60 inch [152,4 cm.]. De witte rand is 6 inch [15,2 cm.], de groene 9 inch [22,9 cm.], en de rode randjes zijn 1 inch [2,54 cm.].

Hier zien jullie mijn versie uit oktober, zonder kerstsfeer. Hij doet mij denken aan antieke Nederlandse lakenstoffen en boerenbont zakdoeken. Deze quilt bestaat uit 7 x 7 blokken, met smalle randen. Hier zijn twee variaties van de Clamshell Rose blokken om en om aan elkaar gezet (de hoeken zijn verschillend). Deze quilt meet 88 x 88 inch [224 cm.].

Deze quilt uit oktober is er eentje met 6 inch Inklingo Clamshell Pickle randen rondom het centrum met Clamshell Rose blokken. Daaromheen nog een lichtgrijze 3 inch [7,6 cm.] rand, en een blauwe en zwarte bies van elk 1 inch [2.54 cm.]. Deze versie meet 70 x 70 inch [178 cm.].

De kerstversie hieronder heeft een extra 3 inch [7,6 cm.] rand, en is daardoor 76 x 76 inch [193 cm.].

Zoals je kunt zien is de Inklingo Clamshell Rose collectie zo veelzijdig, dat je zelfs met identieke 12 inch blokken en Kerstkleuren rood en groen als uitgangspunt, toch twee heel verschillende quilts kunt maken. Vergelijk de warme bovenaan maar met de koeler gekleurde hier!

Merry Christmas!

After my posts with the 8 inch [20.3 cm.] Inklingo Clamshell Rose blocks, and the 16 inch [40.6 cm.] Inklingo Clamshell Rose blocks, I still had to show you my quilt designs with the 12 inch [30.5 cm.] Inklingo Clamshell Rose blocks. So, here they are!

Just to be clear, these blocks all use the same (size) Inklingo shape collection, namely the Inklingo Clamshell Rose 4 inch. The ‘4 inch’ may be a bit confusing. This really is such a versatile collection, that you can make several different sized blocks with it!

Because Christmas is drawing near, I decided to make Christmas versions of my designs from October, to make today’s post a bit Christmassy. In these quilt designs I combined the Clamshell Rose blocks with other Inklingo blocks.

As always with Inklingoable quilts: If you have a picture of the quilt and the necessary Inklingo shape collections, you can sort of write your own pattern, with all the information Linda Franz provides in her shape collections, by filling out ‘Monkey’s Cheat Sheet’ (also in each shape collection).

So this is my Christmas gift to you, two Christmas quilt designs you can easily copy with Inklingo!

‘In the quilt at the complete top of this post, I added five 12 inch Waltzing Matilda blocks. The center part with the blocks measures 60 inch [152.4 cm.]. The white border is 6 inches [15.2 cm.] wide, the green border 9 inches [22.9 cm.], and the red strips are 1 inch [2.54 cm.] finished size.

Here you find my version from October, before I made a Christmas version. With this red and blue coloring, it reminds me of antique Dutch sheets and fabrics, like ‘boerenbont’ hand and neck kerchiefs. This quilt has 7 x 7 blocks, with narrow borders. Two variations of the Clamshell Rose blocks are alternated (the corners of the blocks are different). This quilt measures 88 inch [224 cm.] square.

This quilt design from October, has 6 inch Inklingo Clamshell Pickle borders around the centre with Clamshell Rose blocks. Next, a light grey 3 inch [7.6 cm.] border, followed by a blue border and a black border/binding, 1 inch [2,54 cm.] each.  This blue version measures 70 inch [178 cm.] square.

This Christmas version has one more 3 inch [7.6 cm.] border, making it 76 inch [193 cm.] square.

As you can see, the Clamshell Rose shape collection is so versatile, that even with identical 12 inch blocks and the starting point of Christmas colors red and green, you can make two very different quilts. Just compare the warm one at the top with the cooler one down here! :-)

Bovenstaande quilt met 9 inch [22,9 cm.] blokken had ik al in EQ7 ontworpen, toen ik besloot dat ik jullie ook met een video wilde laten zien hoe je dit blok in EQ kunt tekenen. Maar ik kon me toch niet meer herinneren hoe ik het had gedaan!

Dat was dus even weer uitzoeken :-). Maar het is gelukt, zoals de video hieronder laat zien. Deze video is beter dan de video’s in mijn vorige post.

Ik heb het tekenen eerst een paar keer geoefend, en ik gebruik hulplijnen die het voor jullie gemakkelijk maken om dit na te tekenen.

Er is geen geluid bij. Aan het begin van de video loop ik met de cursor even langs de gebruikte instellingen. Als ik de Snap Settings wijzig, geef ik dat ook even aan.

Nog een tip voor het werken met de Curve Tool: Als je gebogen tekenlijn de verkeerde kant op loopt, druk je even op de spatiebalk op je toetsenbord, terwijl je je cursor vasthoudt. Dan buigt je lijn de andere kant op.

I had already designed the quilt at the top of this post in EQ7, when I decided I wanted to show you in a video how to draft the block in EQ. But I could not remember how I did it!

So it took me quite a while to refigure this out :-). But, I managed, as the video below shows. This video is better than the videos in my previous post.

First, I practiced drafting a couple of times, and I am using guide lines that make it easier for you to draft this after the example in the video.

There is no audio. At the beginning of the video, I am pointing the cursor at the settings I used. I also indicate clearly where I change my snap settings.

And a tip for working with the Curve Tool: If your line curves in the wrong direction, just press the space bar on your keyboard while holding the cursor. It makes your line curve the other way around.

Zoals beloofd nog wat quiltontwerpen van mijn hand met Inklingo Clamshell Rose blokken. Ik hoop dat je ook op Linda Franz’ All About Inklingo blog hebt gekeken hoe veelzijdig de combinatie van de twee nieuwste collecties patroondelen is. Wat doet Linda dat toch fantastisch!

Drafting Clamshell Rose blocks in EQ7

Marianne vroeg mij om te laten zien hoe ik Inklingo Clamshell en Clamshell Rose blokken had getekend in EQ7, want zij wil er ook mee spelen! En ik kan me goed voorstellen dat meer van jullie dat willen, want deze collecties zijn zo inspirerend! En Linda laat op haar blog geweldig zien hoe veelzijdig deze nieuwe patroondelen zijn!

Het tekenen is eigenlijk heel eenvoudig. Ik heb weinig tijd, dus vandaar geen stap-voor-stap tutorial, maar alleen twee screen recordings van het tekenen van een blok. Ik had maar tijd voor 1 opname per blok, dus er zitten nog wat foutjes in (op verkeerde knopjes gedrukt enzo).

En dat het tekenen niet vlot doorloopt heeft ermee te maken dat ik steeds even naar een plaatje op mijn telefoon moest kijken, om te checken hoe ik verder moest. Als je zelf gaat tekenen is het gemakkelijker om een foto van het blok te importeren en op je werkblad te zetten om over te trekken.

Let in de video’s (zonder geluid) even op de settings bovenaan in beeld. Linda geeft op haar site telkens precies aan hoe groot het blok is, dat voer je in als blokmaat.De clamshells zijn 4 inch, dus met een raster gebaseerd op blokjes van 2×2 zit je altijd goed.

Verder is het tekenen heel eenvoudig. Het enige waar je rekening mee moet houden is dat je in EQ, vanwege de vierkante blokken ‘naden’ krijgt die je in het echt niet zou naaien, omdat je doorlopende hele clamshells gebruikt. Die extra ‘naden’ moet je dus negeren.

De eerste video, helemaal bovenaan, laat een blok zien dat Linda hier toont. Het is asymmetrisch, dus dat moet je in zijn geheel tekenen.

Van symmetrische blokken kun je een kwart tekenen, en ze dan in een quilt aan elkaar zetten. Dat laat ik in de tweede video zien.

Marianne asked me to show how I drafted the Inklingo Clamshell (Rose) blocks in EQ7, because she wants to play, too! I fully understand, these new collections are so great!

And Linda is doing a great job showing off the versatility of these blocks on her All About Inklingo blog. So I am guessing many more of you would like to see how to draft these blocks in EQ7.

It is really easy. Because I have little time, no step by step tutorial here, but just two screen recordings of me drafting blocks in EQ7.

Some mistakes are included, because I only had time for one recording per block. The drafting looking a bit slow and uncertain has to do with the fact that I had to keep checking the picture of the example block on my phone! If you start to draft Linda’s blocks, it is easier to import a picture on your drawing table and trace that.

In the videos, watch for the settings at the top of the EQ7 window. Linda tells us exactly what size each block is, use that as block size. The clamshells are four inches, so a grid based on 2 x 2 inch squares works fine. Next, drafting is simple.

The only thing you need to keep in mind is that, because of the square blocks, EQ7 may give you seam lines which you would not actually sew, because you will use continuous, whole clamshells. So ignore those extra ‘seam lines’.

The first video, top of this post, shows a block that Linda shows here on her blog. It is asymmetrical, so you have to draft it as a whole block.

For symmetrical blocks, you can draft only a quarter, and then put them side by side in a quilt. I am showing that in the second video.

Linda Franz heeft twee twee nieuwe Inklingo collecties patroondelen uitgebracht, met nog meer Clamshell patronen! Ze heeft deze keer voortgeborduurd op de populaire 4 inch Clamshell maat, die ze onlangs heeft uitgebracht.

Het zijn heel veelzijdige patroondelen, en ze heeft op haar website en All About Inklingo blog veel voorbeelden van de verschillende blokken die je hiermee kunt maken.

Ik heb er een aantal getekend in EQ7, en ben er toen mee gaan spelen. Natuurlijk heb ik de nieuwe patroondelen ook gecombineerd met patroondelen uit eerdere Inklingo collecties :-).

Inklingo Clamshell Rose 8 inch blocks alternated with Inklingo 8 inch Orange Peel blocks.

Linda Franz has issued two new Inklingo Shape Collections, with even more Clamshell patterns! This time she followed up on the popular 4 inch Clamshell size that she recently issued.

The shapes are very versatile, and she put many examples of different (sized) blocks you can make using these shapes, on her website and All About Inklingo blog.

Same block combination as above: Inklingo Clamshell Rose 8 inch blocks alternated with 8 inch Inklingo Orange Peel blocks, this time set on point.

I drafted some of the blocks in EQ7, and then started playing with them. Of course I also combined the new shapes with shapes from previous Inklingo collections :-).

De Inklingo clamshells zijn er nu in 4 nieuwe maten!

Namelijk: 2 inch clamshells [ca. 5,1 cm.], 2,5 inch clamshells [ca. 6,4 cm.], 4 inch clamshells [ca. 10,2 cm.], en 6 inch clamshells [ca. 15,2 cm.].  3 inch [ca. 7,6 cm.] en 3,5 inch clamshells [ca. 8,9 cm.] waren er al om te downloaden. Je vindt alle maten clamshells hier op de Inklingo site.

Traditioneel en heel bekend zijn natuurlijk de quilts in een doorlopend clamshellpatroon van veel verschillende stofjes (restjes). Prachtig, en Linda Franz laat hier op haar All About Inklingo blog zien hoe je met Inklingo ook van die mooie scrappy clamshell quilts kunt maken.

Daarom vind ik het leuk om vandaag wat andere, en voor clamshells minder traditionele ideeën te laten zien. Hier komen ze.

Simpele Horizontale Strip Quilt met Clamshells – Door de kleuring van de clamshell blokjes lijken ze een zwevende geschulpte rand te vormen.

Eenvoudige Horizontale Strip Quilt met Clamshells. Variatie op de groen-blauwe quilt hierboven met vijf rijen clamshells i.p.v. een, in maar twee kleuren stof.

Eenvoudige Horizontal Strip Quilt met Clamshells, variatie 3. De rijen clamshells zijn hier tegen elkaar in geplaatst, waardoor er een rij cirkels tussen de clamshells lijkt te ontstaan.

Applique Medaillon Quilt met Clamshell Rand. De clamshells wijzen hier naar buiten, hieronder volgt nog een variatie met de clamshells naar binnen. De blauwe clamshells in de hoeken moet je waarschijnlijk appliqueren. De vaas met bloemen is een kant en klaar blok in EQ7.

Applique Medaillon Quilt met Clamshell Rand Variatie.

Je kunt deze ontwerpen eenvoudig aanpassen voor verschillende maten clamshells. Als je het leuk vindt, Inklingo biedt de nieuwe maten tegen een speciale introductieprijs aan tot en met 15 september 2016.

Inklingo clamshells are now available in 4 new sizes!

They are: 2 inch clamshells [ca. 5.1 cm.], 2.5 inch clamshells [ca. 6.4 cm.], 4 inch clamshells [ca. 10.2 cm.], and 6 inch clamshells [ca. 15.2 cm.].  3 Inch [ca. 7.6 cm.] and 3.5 inch clamshells [ca. 8.9 cm.] were already available for downloading. You will find all sizes of clamshells here on the Inklingo site.

Traditional, and very familiar are of course the quilts in an allover clamshell pattern of many different fabrics. Beautiful, and Linda Franz shows on her All About Inklingo Blog how you can easily make these pretty scrappy clamshell quilts with Inklingo too.

That is why I chose to show you some different ideas here, a bit less traditional for clamshells. Here they are:

Simple Horizontal Strip Quilt with Clamshells. Because of the color placement in the clamshell blocks, the clamshells appear to form a floating scalloped border.

Simple Horizontal Strip Quilt with Clamshells. Variation on the green-blue quilt above, with five rows of clamshells instead of one, and only two colors of fabric.

Simple Horizontal Strip Quilt with Clamshells, variation 3. The rows of clamshells are set opposing each other, which makes a row of circles appear in between.

Applique Medaillon Quilt with Clamshell Inner Border. The clamshells are facing outward in this design, below is a variation with clamshells facing inwards. You would probably have to applique the blue clamshells in the corners. The vase with flowers is an existing block in EQ7.

You can easily adapt these designs for different sizes of clamshells. And if you like them, Inklingo is offering the new clamshell sizes at a special introductory price until 15 September 2016, midnight.

Hier zijn een paar clamshell quiltontwerpen die ik gemaakt heb als voorbeelden van wat er mogelijk is met de Inklingo clamshell collecties. Deze ontwerpen zijn zonder de sashings die ik zo mooi vind, omdat dat lastig te tekenen is in EQ6/EQ7. Als ik het kon zou ik daar zeker ook voorbeelden van tekenen. Er zijn gelukkig wel plaatjes van clamshells met sashings, zie het ‘All about Inklingo’ blog van Linda Franz. Ik heb deze ontwerpen van mij al eerder gedeeld, in de Inklingo Yahoo Groep, dus ze zullen sommigen van jullie bekend voorkomen.

Here are a couple of clamshell quilt designs that I made to show what is possible with the Inklingo clamshell collections. These designs are without sashings that I like so much, because they are difficult to draw in EQ6/EQ7. If I could I would certainly draw some examples of those. Luckily there are pictures of clamshells with sashings on Linda Franz’s blog ‘All about Inklingo’. I have shared these designs of mine before, with the Inklingo Yahoo Group, so some of you will recognize them.

Een verticale banenquilt, in licht en donker. Als je deze precies zo zou maken met de Inklingo 3 inch  clamshell-collectie wordt hij 137 cm. breed en 145 cm hoog (de banen tussen de clamshells zijn ca. 19 cm. breed en de randen zijn ca. 15,2 cm breed.). Alle banen in het middendeel zijn 114,3 cm hoog.

First a vertical strippy quilt, in a light and a dark version. If you would make one exactly like this with the Inklingo 3″ clamshell collection, it would be 54″ x 57″. The vertical strips between the clamshell strips are 7.5″ wide, (2.5 x size of clamshell) and the borders are 6″ wide (2 x size of clamshell). The height of all the inner strips is 45″. If you were to make this quilt with the 3,5″ clamshell collection, and scale everything up with the same proportions  it would end up 62 x 66.5″.

Als je deze quilt zou maken met de Inklingo 3,5 inch clamshell collectie, en alles in verhouding groter zou maken, dan wordt hij ca. 158 cm. x 169 cm.

Dit ontwerp leent zich voor bijv. appliqué op de randen of tussen de clamshells. Zonder appliqué en met rustige stoffen kun je de randen gebruiken om aandacht te vestigen op prachtig quiltwerk. Ik denk dat het er ook goed zou uitzien met bijv. grote Aziatische prints op de vlakken.

This design is suitable for appliqué on the borders or between the clamshell strips. Without appliqué and with a ‘quiet’  fabric you could use those spaces to attract attention to beautiful quilting. I think it would also look good with e.g. large Asian prints for the strips and borders.

Deze noem ik peppermint swirl clamshells. Het  rechter plaatje laat d.m.v. de lijntjes zien hoe de blokken zijn opgebouwd. Het zijn dezelfde blokken als waarvan er boven steeds vijf boven elkaar zijn gezet in de clamshell banen. Hier zijn ze in verschillende richtingen aan elkaar gezet, zodat vier basisblokken samen een groter blok vormen. Elk basisblok is 22,9 cm. De totale afmetingen, inclusief bies van 2,5 cm. is 188 x 188 cm, als je hem maakt met de Inklingo 3″ clamshell collectie. Met de 3,5″ clamshell collectie zou hij  ruim 218 x 218 cm. worden. Maar je kunt natuurlijk altijd minder blokken maken.

This one I call peppermint swirl clamshells. The picture on the right has lines to show how this design is built up. The base blocks are exactly the same as in the strippy quilt. In the strips five of each are put above one another. Here they are set side by side in different directions, so four base blocks together form a larger new block. Each base block is 9″ (3 x 3″ Inklingo clamshell). Total dimensions, including the 1″ pink binding, are 74″ x 74″. If you would make this with the 3.5″ Inklingo clamshell collection, it would end up 86 x 86 inches.

 

 

 

Clamshell carpet quilt

Deze heb ik heel enthousiast ontworpen zonder erbij na te denken hoe groot hij zou worden! Oeps, met de Inklingo 3″ clamshell collectie wordt hij al 328 x 328 cm… Ik laat hem toch zien omdat ik hem zelf erg mooi vind. En misschien is er wel een halve gare in cyberspace die dolgraag honderden miniatuur clamshells in elkaar wil zetten en nog een leuk ontwerp zoekt? Zo ja, veel plezier ermee! Stuur me een foto als hij af is :-)

I was having a lot of fun designing this one and I never thought about how big it would be! Oops, with the Inklingo 3″ clamshell collection it would already be 129 x 129 inches…I am showing it anyway because I like it a lot. And who knows, there might be some nutcase out there in cyberspace that is just dying to stitch together hundreds of miniature clamshells, but is just looking for a nice design? clamshell stamp quilt

Dit ontwerp laat zien hoe de carpet quilt is opgebouwd. Het zijn weer dezelfde clamshell basisblokken. Dit is een klein deel van de quilt hierboven, en is daarom ‘iets’ haalbaarder. Voor de halve cirkels in de randen zou je de ‘halve clamshells’ kunnen gebruiken uit de afzonderlijke collectie met clamshell randdelen, en deze bijv. appliqueren op stroken voor de randen. De Clamshell Edges collection is op dit moment alleen nog maar beschikbaar voor 3 inch clamshells, maar ik weet zeker dat als voldoende mensen verzoeken om een andere maat, Linda@lindafranz.com die voor je maakt!

Deze quilt is ca. 152 cm. in het vierkant.

This design with lines shows how the carpet quilt above is built up. I used the same base clamshell blocks again. It is a part of the carpet quilt, and therefore ‘slightly’ more doable. For the half circles in the borders you could use the ‘half clamshells’ that are in the separate Inklingo clamshells edges collection. You could appliqué them onto strips for borders. At the moment there are only Clamshell Edges available for the 3.0 ” Clamshells, but I am sure that if enough people request for another size, Linda@lindafranz.com would make one for you!

This quilt measures 60 x 60 inches. The outside borders are 1.5 inches each (half the width of a clamshell), and the borders with half circles are 4.5″ (1.5 times the width of a clamshell) wide each (2 squares in the drawing are 4.5 inch).

I Am Happy as a Clam Quilt

Ik ben dol op Inklingo’s laatste collecties, de clamshells, en dan vooral die met de sashings. Ik ben in juni naar de quilttentoonstelling in het Victoria & Albertmuseum in Londen geweest waar de antieke set bedgordijnen in dit patroon hing. Erg inspirerend!

Helaas ben ik niet handig genoeg met EQ om de clamshells met sashings te tekenen, vandaar als illlustratie alleen een ontwerpje met een ‘happy clam’ zonder de sashings. Omdat ik vandaag wel wat vrolijkheid kon gebruiken (maandag, treinperikelen, natgeregend, etc…) heb ik een gedichtje geschreven, geïnspireerd door deze collecties. Alleen in het Engels. Ik heb nog even in het woordenboek opgezocht wat ‘clam’ is om te kijken of ik er iets mee kon in het Nederlands: ‘tweekleppig schelpdier’ . Tja.. “Ik heb een plezier als een tweekleppig schellupdier?” Nee.

I love Inklingo’s latest collections, the clamshells, especially those with sashings. In June I visited the Quilts exhibition in the Victoria & Albert museum in London, where the antique set of bed curtains in this pattern was displayed. Very inspiring! Unfortunately I am not good enough with EQ to draw the clamshells with sashings, that is why I just made this little design with a happy clam as illustration. 

Because I could use a little cheering up today (Monday, train troubles, a cold rain shower, etc.) I wrote a little verse inspired  by these collections. I thought I’d share this with you, since the previous only slightly quilty nonsense went down so well ;-)

 

Happy as a Clam

 

My trees are growing jam

My pigs are laying spam

I walk my dog by tram

My cat says ‘thank you mam’

I’m happy as a clam

My rabbits push a pram
