I think classic New York Beauty Quilts, with the spiky sashings, are wonderful!

If you don’t know what I mean, you can see great examples on Willy Wonky’s blog.

I have experimented in EQ7 with pieced sashings made of only Inklingo Shapes, and these were the prettiest I came up with.

I am showing them here in different sets, with various Inklingo blocks (New York Beauty blocks, Double Sunflower blocks), and in variations of contrast and light-dark coloring in the sashings.

The sashings are 4.5 inch wide and 12 inches long.

You can combine them with ‘quartets’ of 6 inch blocks, or with 12 inch blocks.

In the corner stones you can set 4.5 inch blocks, like the eight pointed star you can make from the free Inklingo collection of shapes.

For the sashings I used the 60 degree triangles with 2 inch sides.

In between I used a setting strip of about 1 inch wide (1.03 inch to be exact), to finish the sashings at 4.5 inches wide.

A quilt layout with strong sashings is very suited for nicely pulling together a sampler quilt with a variety of different blocks.

An example is my Burlington Beauty quilt design, a sampler with 12 of Linda Franz’ variations of New York Beauty blocks that you can make with her NYB Inklingo shape collections.

Linda lives in Burlington (Ontario, Canada), and she is a beauty in every sense, hence the name!

Of course you could also alternate the 12 inch NYB blocks in your sampler with other 12 inch Inklingo blocks with a circular shape, like the (Double) Sunflower or the Fancy Pieced Dresden Plate Blocks with a single ring of triangles.

Which quilt design do you like best?

  1. Oh Annika, how can I choose? I love your sashings. I’m going to save this blog post!!!!You are so talented! Now can you come up with some borders for our “Case of The Secret Garden” quilts? Wish I was so talented and used EQ7!

    • Thank you for the compliment Ruth!

I don’t have a favorite either. Lucky us, with Inklingo we don’t really have to choose. Linda has made even complicated looking quilts quick and frustration-free for us. So we could make two of these quilts in the time other quilters need to make just one!

I will play a bit with Linda’s Secret Garden project file, in your color combination. I love your fabric choices. Your finished top is my favorite of the ones I have seen so far.

What kind of borders would you like? Do you want to make your quilt top a bit bigger? And if so, do you have plenty more of your fabric, or only a bit for border strips?

If you let me know, I will work with that.

      Hugs, Annika

  2. Love this post! Now I want to open up EQ7 and play with sashings. I shall save this post for later, and see if I can duplicate your sashings. I will learn something new! Thank you!

    • Thank you Laura!

Here are some tips for drawing the sashings.

*** I changed my snap settings during drawing. Did you know you can do that? You don’t have to keep the settings you start with.

I did that because of the awkward measurements for the width of the vertical strips you start your drawing with (approximating 1.735 inches from the sides of the 4.5 inch wide block, leaving a 1.03 inch wide strip running through the middle.)

I wanted the 60 degree triangles to look as equilateral as possible, so I created many snaps.
These would have been in my way later on, so I decreased the number of snaps after drawing the first two vertical lines.

*** Now you have to create snaps on the vertical lines to be able to draw the triangles.
‘Edit Line’ and choose ‘Stagger’ 6, and click on the lines.

*** Now make sure you have turned on ‘snap to lines of drawing’ for drawing the triangles.

*** I created the ‘quartets of NYB blocks’ in between the sashings, as one block with four quarters, with the Serendipity Block tool ‘shrink and flip’.
No need to draw anything, just download Linda’s EQ project file.

(If you just use Linda’s ‘quarter circle blocks’ to set in one of EQ’s regular quilt layouts with sashing, you will end up with a sashing around each separate quarter circle block, and perhaps scratch your head as to what kind of quilt layout I used!)

Good luck! And if you have questions, I will be glad to answer them.

      Hugs, Annika

  3. Ik kan weer eens moeilijk kiezen… New York beauty (nklingo 12 inch Dubbele Sunflower Blokken met Inklingo puntige sashings) of Burlington Beauty in orange and blue…

      kuzziez! Annika
