Adapting pattern sizes for Inklingo

In mijn vorige post heb ik misschien de indruk gewekt dat Inklingo speciaal voor handnaaiers is. Geheel ten onrechte, waarvoor mijn excuses! Inklingo is misschien nog wel handiger voor – en van meer invloed op – machinaal naaien en appliqué.
Inklingo maakt het ook heel makkelijk om handgenaaide en machinaal genaaide delen te combineren in een quilt of zelfs in een blok. Hieronder een quilt waarbij ik dat gedaan heb.
Spring Star quilt
De sterren in het midden heb ik met de hand genaaid met behulp van Inklingo. De tulpjes zijn machinaal genaaid op een papieren ondergrond. Het in elkaar zetten is met de hand en machine gedaan, wat maar het makkelijkst was. Ik heb de quilt met de naaimachine (met BSR) gequilt. Het is best mooi geworden, maar ik heb helaas geen foto waarop je dat goed kunt zien. Sorry!
Ik ga hier niet in op de techniek van het combineren van handnaaien en machinaal naaien omdat ik geen foto’s heb gemaakt tijdens het proces. Als je er zelf mee aan de slag gaat wijst het zich eigenlijk allemaal vanzelf.
Ik zal wel uitleggen hoe je, zonder rekenwerk, in principe elk patroon zo kunt aanpassen dat je de Inklingo patroondelen (die vaste maten in inches hebben) kunt gebruiken, zo dat je een accuraat patroon hebt voor eventuele niet-Inklingo patroondelen.
In Europa werken we vaak met patronen in centimeters. Je kunt probleemloos voor elk patroon in centimeters Inklingo patroondelen gebruiken als alle benodigde patroondelen in Inklingo beschikbaar zijn. In dat geval moet je er gewoon rekening mee houden dat je blokken iets groter of kleiner worden. Je kunt dit makkelijk ondervangen door meer of minder blokken te gebruiken, bredere of smallere randen etc.
Voor de Spring Star quilt waren alleen de ruitjes voor de achtpuntige ster in Inklingo beschikbaar, de overige patroondelen niet. De maat van de afzonderlijke ruitjes in de ster waren een gegeven, omdat ik daarvoor de (gratis) Inklingo 4,5 inch LeMoyne Star collectie wilde gebruiken. (Je kunt ook kiezen voor de iets grotere ruitjes van de 6 inch LeMoyne Star collectie). Ik moest dus weten hoe groot mijn totale quilt zou worden als ik Inklingo zou gebruiken, en hoe groot de tulpenblokken moesten worden om precies in de Inklingo-ster te passen. Hoe doe je dat als je geen wiskundig genie bent?
Dan gebruik je natuurlijk Electric Quilt software, die al het rekenwerk voor je doet! Zelfs het tekenwerk was gelukkig al voor mij gedaan. Ik heb het patroon in een Japans boek van Reiko Washizawa,

maar het bleek ook op de cd-rom ‘Judy Martin’s Stars and Sets’ van de Electric Quilt company te staan (helaas niet meer verkrijgbaar).
Als de blokken niet in EQ7 staan kun je ze meestal wel zelf natekenen, en het maakt niet uit in welke maat je dat doet. Als je blok of quilt eenmaal in EQ7 staat kun je hem naar believen vergroten en verkleinen en in elke gewenste maat, inches of centimeters, uitprinten. Ik wist de maat van de Inklingo sterpunt, nl. 1,32 inch.
Inklingo sterpunt 4,5 inch LeMoyne Star
Het enige wat je dan nog hoeft te doen (en deze stappen gelden in principe voor elk patroon):
- in EQ7 (of EQ6) je instellingen op inches zetten (is bij mij standaard).
- Vervolgens in het werkblad ‘Quilt’ de lineaal selecteren op je toolbalk.
- Meet een sterpuntje in het scherm op door met je muis te klikken op het beginpunt van een ster,
opmeten van de lengte van een sterpuntje
- en vervolgens de muis langs de hele zijkant van de sterpunt te slepen. De lengte verschijnt in beeld.
- Stel dat de maat 0.5 inch is. Dan weet je dat je de maat van je blok groter moet instellen, zodat je sterpuntje ook groter wordt. Je blok moet iets minder dan drie keer groter worden.
- Ga naar de Layout tab en verander de maat van je blok. Stel dat hij 9 inch was, dan maak je hem nu 25 inch.
- Ga weer naar Layer 1 van je quilt en herhaal het opmeten van de sterpunt.
- Als het goed is zit de maat nu dicht bij de juiste maat. Schat hoeveel je je blok nog moet vergroten.
- Pas de blokmaat weer aan op het tabblad Layout.
- Herhaal dit net zo vaak tot de lineaal bij je sterpunt de juiste afmeting aangeeft. (De lineaal rondt maten af tot een cijfer achter de punt met een nul erachter, dus springt van 1.30 inch direct naar 1.40 inch. Wanneer je ruitje exact 1.32 inch is kun je dus niet zien).
De lineaal geeft de juiste maat aan
Voor iets meer precisie kun je daarom de lengte nemen van een aantal sterpuntjes naast elkaar. Drie x 1.32 inch = 3.96. Als je lineaal bij 3 sterpuntjes nog steeds 3.90 aangeeft is je blok nog iets te klein. Als je lineaal 4 inch aangeeft weet je dat je ongeveer goed zit.

- Je blokmaat is nu 25.5 inch. Op deze maat moet je het patroon van je blok uitprinten.
Sla je project op, en zorg dat je de versie met de juiste maten duidelijk kunt herkennen.
- Controleer de totale uiteindelijke maat van je quiltontwerp door de inches te vermenigvuldigen met 2.54. De uitkomst is de maat in centimeters. Is deze afmeting wat je voor ogen had?
- Pas eventueel het quiltontwerp aan om de gewenste afmetingen te bereiken, terwijl je de blokmaat op de juiste maat laat staan.
(Voor het Spring Star blok in een grotere maat kun je de Inklingo 6 inch LeMoyne Star collectie gebruiken. De zijden van de ruitjes zijn dan 1,75 inch. Je blokmaat moet 33.5 inch zijn om dat te bereiken.)
- Print de benodigde patroondelen uit EQ met de optie ‘size from quilt’.
- Het is verstandig om te controleren of je patroon accuraat is door de patroondelen te vergelijken met de overeenkomstige gesneden Inklingo patroondelen. (Omdat de lineaal geen cijfers achter de komma aangeeft).
- Je patroon klopt :-)
- Naai een perfecte quilt met helemaal zelf aangepaste maten, waarbij Inklingo en niet-Inklingo patroondelen precies op elkaar passen!

In my previous post I may have given the impression that Inklingo is especially for handpiecers. That is totally incorrect, and I do apologise! Inklingo may even be handier for – and have more impact on – machine piecing and appliqué.
Inklingo also makes combining handpieced and machine pieced parts in a quilt or even in one block very easy. This post is about a quilt in which I did that, the Spring Star baby quilt.
I did not draw the block myself, it is from the cd-rom ‘Judy Martin’s Stars and Sets’ which is no longer STILL (at half price while supplies last!) available from the Electric Quilt company. I have handpieced the stars in the middle using Inklingo patches. The tulips were foundation pieced by machine. I sewed all the parts together by hand and by machine, whatever was easiest. I quilted it by machine (with BSR). It turned out quite nicely, but I don’t have a picture which shows the quilting well. I am sorry!
I will not go into the techniques of combining hand piecing and machine piecing because I did not take any photographs while I was making this quilt. It is very easy, and you just can make it up as you go along.
I will explain how you can adapt basically any pattern, without calculations, so you can use Inklingo shapes with their fixed sizes for it. This way will give you an accurate paper pattern for the non-Inklingo parts.
In Europe we use the metric system, so using patterns in inches can scare some quilters off, and it is a barrier for using Inklingo. But even if you are used to working in inches, it may be handy to know how to easily adapt patterns to incorporate Inklingo shapes.
For the Spring Star quilt only the diamonds for the star were available as Inklingo shapes, the other parts were not. I wanted to use the (free) Inklingo 4,5″ LeMoyne Star collection, so the size of these diamonds was my fixed starting point. (I could also have chosen the bigger diamonds of the 6″ LeMoyne Star collection). I had to find out how big my quilt would become using Inklingo, and how big the tulip blocks would have to be to fit exactly in the Inklingo-star. How do you do that when you are not a math-wiz?
You use Electric Quilt software of course! It does all the calculations for you, and it had even already done the drawing for me.
I have a paper pattern (in centimeters) in a Japanese quilting book by Reiko Washizawa, but of course having the block in EQ is much handier. If you use another pattern, there is a chance that the blocks are already in EQ, and if not, you can usually draw them yourself. And once your block or quilt is in EQ, you can resize it to your heart’s content and print it in any size.
So, knowing the size of the diamond for the eight pointed star, 1.32 inch, all you have to do is (and these steps are for any pattern):
- Make sure the settings in EQ6 or EQ7 are to inches (instead of centimeters)
- Have your quilt on the screen, on the quilt worktable
- Be on layer 1, select the Ruler on your Toolbar
- Measure the side of the Inklingo patch of which you know the size. In this case a diamond. Click with your mouse on the start of the side you want to measure, and drag the mouse along the entire side. The size appears on screen.

- Suppose the ruler shows 0.5″. Then you know you have to make the block size bigger, in order to increase your Inklingo patch in size as well. In this case the block size has to be almost three times bigger.
- Go to the Layout tab and change block size. Suppose it was 9, make it 25 now.
- Return to Layer 1 of your quilt and repeat the measuring. The Inklingo patch should be close to the correct size now.
- Estimate how much you need to increase block size.
- Change block size again on the Layout tab.
- Repeat the steps above until the ruler indicates the correct size. (The ruler rounds off sizes until one digit behind the dot, with a zero behind it. So the measurement jumps from 1.30″ to 1.40″, making it impossible to know when you hit exactly 1.32″.)
- For more precision you can measure the sides of several patches together. Let’s say three. 3 x 1.32 = 3.96. That is close enough to 4.0″.
- If your ruler still indicates 3.90 measuring 3 diamonds, then your block size is still too small. Change it so that the ruler indicates 4.00.

- Block size is 25.5 now. This is the size at which you should print your pattern.
- Save your project, and make sure you can easily recognize the version with the right sizes!
- Check the total measurement of your quilt. Is this what you had in mind?
- You may want to adapt the quilt design to achieve the proper size, while leaving the block size unchanged.
- (For the Spring Star block in a bigger size, you can use the Inklingo 6″ LeMoyne Star collection. The diamonds are 1.75″. Your block size should be set to 33.5)
- Print the parts of the pattern you need with the option ‘size from quilt’.
- It is advisable to check the accuracy of your pattern by comparing it with cut Inklingo shapes.
- The pattern is accurate ;-)
- Make a perfect quilt combining Inklingo and non-Inklingo patches!

Both LeMoyne Star collections provide basic shapes that are useful to make all kinds of patchwork blocks. One of the blocks you can make is a square block with an eight pointed star. The free collection gives a 4,5″ block (11,4 cm.) the 6″ collection gives a larger block (15,2 cm.) I used only the diamonds in the Spring Star quilt.
