Tips for Designing a Photo Patchwork Quilt

In EQ7 kun je van een geïmporteerde afbeelding automatisch een fotopatchwork maken. Dat heb ik gedaan met een foto van Arie Boomsma, zoals ik al had aangekondigd in deze post. 

Als je hem leuk vindt (de quilt) kun je hem maken met de informatie die ik hieronder geef. En ik hoop dat je dan in ruil een donatie wilt doen voor het Libby Lehman Medical Fund. Libby en haar familie zullen je dankbaar zijn!

Over het maken van een fotopatchwork

Een uitvoerbaar fotopatchwork produceren is nog iets lastiger dan je zou denken:

• Als je foto veel verschillende kleuren/tinten heeft, geeft EQ je een enorm lange ‘yardage’ lijst met voor elk lapje een andere kleur stof. Veel van die kleuren zijn dan moeilijk van elkaar te onderscheiden, zodat je niet weet welke kleur bij welke patroondelen hoort.

• Als de foto weinig contrast heeft, wordt je fotopatchwork een vage brij.

Het selecteren van de juiste afbeelding is daarom heel belangrijk. Gelukkig kun je met EQ7 of  een fotobewerkingsprogramma (zoals bijv. PhotoShop Elements) heel wat doen om de afbeelding van je keuze geschikter te maken.

Een paar tips:

• Neem een klein onderwerp (bijv. alleen een gezicht of een detail). Snijd een grotere foto bij (crop).
• Zorg voor een neutrale (effen) achtergrond. Verwijder evt. de achtergrond uit je afbeelding.
• Verander een kleurenafbeelding in zwart-wit.
• Verminder het aantal kleuren (kleurdiepte) zoveel mogelijk.
• Misschien moet je dan ook nog wat spelen met het contrast of de donker/licht verhouding in je foto.

Als je hem daarna importeert op je Quilt Worktable (Image Tab) heb je kans dat je dan een heel herkenbaar fotopatchwork krijgt, vooral gezien vanaf een afstandje.

Zelf vind ik dat de zeshoekige fotopatchworks iets betere afbeeldingen opleveren dan die met vierkantjes. Zie het voorbeeld hierboven. Overigens geeft de yardage lijst hier 3 A4-tjes met verschillende tinten grijs! Dat wordt dan wel een hele uitzoekerij.

Ik heb voor deze post daarom een ontwerp met vierkantjes uitgewerkt, met maar negen verschillende kleuren (en nog eentje voor de rand). Dat is zelfs voor beginners snel en eenvoudig te maken. Misschien kan evangelist Arie zo nog wat nieuwe zieltjes voor het quilten winnen :-).

Hoewel deze quilt maar een beperkt aantal verschillende tinten grijze stof heeft, heb ik, om het zoeken naar de juiste plaatsing voor elke kleur stof makkelijker te maken, ook een gekleurde versie van het fotopatchwork gemaakt.

Elke tint grijs is vervangen door een makkelijker te onderscheiden kleur. Als ik nu beide lijsten met stof uitprint, en ze naast elkaar leg, kan ik precies zien welke grijs door welke kleur is vervangen.

En als ik dan de gekleurde foto erbij houd, kan ik vervolgens alle grijze vierkantjes gemakkelijk op de juiste plek in de quilt plaatsen.

Je ziet dat je ook gerust met ‘rare kleuren’ kunt werken voor een herkenbaar portret, het hoeft geen grijs te zijn!

De hoeveelheden stof zijn gebaseerd op vierkantjes van 1 inch [2,54 cm.], afgewerkte maat. De rand is ook 1 inch breed.

Als je je vierkantjes in een andere maat neemt, moet je dus ook de hoeveelheid stof aanpassen. De juiste hoeveelheid is gemakkelijk te berekenen, met de door EQ genoemde aantallen vierkantjes per kleur (zie de getallen onder ‘number of patches’ in de afbeeldingen hierboven).

Als je Inklingo vierkantjes neemt (die zijn er in verschillende maten van 0,5 inch tot 9 inch en van alles daar tussenin!), dan staat de benodigde hoeveelheid stof in de Inklingo-pdf met de patroondelen.

En voor het berekenen van de afmetingen van de quilt: Het fotopatchwork is 32 blokjes hoog, en 39 blokjes wijd.

About making a photo patchwork

Producing a photo patchwork you could actually make is a bit trickier than you may expect:

• If your picture has many different colors/shades, EQ will render an outrageously long ‘yardage’ overview, with a different color fabric for each single patch. Many of the colors are hard to tell apart, so you can’t tell which color is for which patch.

• If your picture has little contrast, your photo patchwork will become a vague affair.

Therefore, selecting a good picture is very important. Thankfully, with EQ7 or with image editing software (like PhotoShop Elements), you can do a lot to make the picture of your choice more suitable.

Some tips:

• Select a small subject (like just a face or a detail). Crop a larger picture.
• Make sure there is a neutral (solid) background. If necessary, remove the background from the picture.
• Change a colored picture into black-and-white.
• Decrease the number of colors as much as possible.
• Additionally, you may have to play a bit with contrast or light/dark settings in your picture.

If you import a picture after making the necessary edits, onto your Quilt Worktable (Image Tab), chances are that you will get a very recognizable photo patchwork, especially when viewed from a bit of distance.

I actually think the hexagonal photo patchworks produce somewhat better pictures than the ones with square patches. See the example above.

Mind you, the yardage overview for this version is 3 pages of different shades of gray!  It would take a lot of detective work to find the right shades of fabric, and find the spots to place them in the quilt.

That’s why I chose squares for this example project, with only nine different shades of fabric (and one more for the border). That way this quilt is very quick and simple to construct, even for beginners. Perhaps this way, evangelist Arie can convert some innocents into new quilters :-).

Although this quilt only has a limited number of gray shades, to make finding the right spot for each gray easier, I made a colored version of the photo patchwork. I replaced each gray with an easily discernable color.

This way, if I print both yardage overviews, and put them next to each other, I can immediately see what shade of gray was replaced by which color. And with a picture of the colored photo patchwork at hand, I can very easily place all my gray squares in the right position in the quilt.

And you see, you can also use ‘unnatural colors’ for a portrait, it does not have to be gray!

The amount of fabric in these yardage calculations is based on 1 inch [2.54 cm.] squares, finished size. The border is one inch as well.

If you take squares of a different size, you can easily recalculate the yardage, with the number of patches for each color stated by EQ on the yardage overview (see the columns ‘number of patches’ in the pictures above).

If you use Inklingo squares (available in several sizes, from 0,5 inch to 9 inch, with lots in between), you can find information on yardage in the Inklingo shape collection of your choice.

And for calculating the size of the quilt: The photo patchwork is 32 squares high, and 39 squares wide.

De Wetenschappelijke Benadering van het Bevorderen van Liefdadigheid

Goed, ik wil jullie graag inspireren om royaal te zijn met donaties aan het Libby Lehman Medical Fund. Nou heb ik daar wat wetenschappelijke literatuur op nageslagen.

Wat je moet doen om gulheid te stimuleren, is een beroep doen op de emoties van mensen, zoals dankbaarheid, hoop en het verlangen om goed te doen. Appelleren aan religieuze gevoelens werkt ook geefbereidheid in de hand.

Vervolgens heb ik eens nagedacht over de doelgroep van dit blog. Ik schat zo in dat de meerderheid vrouw is en boven de 30.

Ik heb al twee posts geschreven over de toestand van Libby Lehman. Dus als ik je nog niet zo ver heb gekregen om geld te sturen, dan moet iemand anders het maar doen.

En als je dan een ‘big gun’ zoekt, die bij rijpe vrouwen religieuze gevoelens kan oproepen, dankbaarheid, hoop en het verlangen om het eens goed te doen, dan kom je vrijwel automatisch uit bij ‘relihunk’ Arie Boomsma.

Ik weet niet hoe het met jullie zit, maar een plaatje van Arie werkt bij mij heel stimulerend op van alles en nog wat. O.a. mijn geefbereidheid (“O ja, neem me!”) en mijn fantasie. Mijn creatieve sappen (en nog zo wat vocht) gaan er lekker van stromen.

Ik heb wat gedichtjes over hem geschreven, en een quiltontwerp gemaakt met de beeltenis van Arie. Hier een voorbeeldje (zie ook de Engelse versie onderaan), later meer.

Uiteraard uitsluitend voor het goede doel, dat snappen jullie wel.

Dus: geef voor Libby! In mijn vorige post staat hoe dat moet.

I want to inspire you to be generous with your donations to the Libby Lehman Medical Fund. So I checked some scientific literature on that topic.

What you should do to promote generosity, is appeal to people’s emotions, for example gratitude, hope and the desire to do good. Appealing to religious sentiments also works to increase willingness to give.

Next, I did some thinking about the target group of this blog. I am guessing that most of you are female and 30 plus.

I already wrote two posts about Libby Lehman’s condition. So, if by now I have not gotten you to send money, I should bring in ‘a big gun’.

And if you are looking for someone in The Netherlands that can inspire in ripe women religious feelings, gratitude, hope, and the desire to do it good, you almost automatically end up at ‘reli hunk’ Arie Boomsma.

I don’t know about you, but for me, a picture of this author, tv personality and model, acts very stimulating on all kinds of stuff. Among other, my willingness to give (“Oh yes! Take me!”) and my fantasy. He gets my creative juices (and some other juices, too) flowing all over the place. 

I have written poems about him, and made a quilt design with Arie’s picture. A small sample of poetry below. Solely for charitative purposes of course.

How to donate for Libby via PayPal

Doneren voor Libby met PayPal

Zoals beloofd in mijn vorige post is hier de informatie over het doneren aan het fonds voor de medische kosten voor Libby Lehman. Ze gaat naar omstandigheden goed vooruit, en krijgt momenteel drie verschillende vormen van (fysio) therapie per dag.

Haar familie heeft een PayPal-rekening aangemaakt, en nu is doneren van waar ook ter wereld echt een eitje! Een PayPal-rekening om mee te betalen kun je gratis en snel aanmaken en gebruiken.

Om geld over te maken heb je geen cheques nodig, geen credit card, en ook geen bankrekeningnummer van degene naar wie je geld wilt overmaken. Alleen het e-mailadres dat bij de PayPal-rekening hoort is genoeg.

As promised in my previous post, here is the information about donating to the fund for Libby Lehman‘s medical bills. She is doing well under the circumstances, and currently receives three forms of physical therapy every day.

Her family set up a PayPal account, so now donating from anywhere in the world is easy as pie! You can set up and use a PayPal account for sending money, free and very quick.

To transfer money you don’t need cheques, no credit card, not even a bank account number of the person you want to send money to. Just the e-mail address that goes with their PayPal account.

PayPal will notify you you are sending money to ‘William’. That is William M Arnold, Libby’s brother-in-law, who is a Trustee for the fund.

Counting My Blessings – Poem inspired by Libby and my Dad

Als lid van The Quilt Show hoorde ik over de zware beroerte van Libby Lehman. Het nieuws raakte mij op een bepaalde manier persoonlijk.

Ik had mezelf beloofd dat als ik eindelijk van mijn tennis/golferselleboog afben, ik bij haar op les zou gaan om het te vieren! Ik vind haar Threadplay namelijk fantastisch, en ze is mijn favoriete instructor bij The Quilt Show.

Ten tweede is mijn vader grotendeels verlamd door een zware beroerte. Libby’s toestand, die je kunt volgen via Caring Bridge, hield mij de afgelopen weken daarom nogal bezig.

The Quilt Show is bezig met een actie om geld in te zamelen voor therapie voor Libby. Die wordt namelijk maar voor een heel klein deel vergoed door haar ziektekostenverzekering. De rest moet de familie zelf betalen, en dat gaat, waarschijnlijk jarenlang, nog heel veel geld kosten.

Ricky Tims en Alex Anderson van de Quilt Show (zoek naar het tabje ‘Help Libby’) hebben allebei een quilt ter beschikking gesteld om te verloten, in ruil voor het zenden van een cheque aan Libby’s familie.

Graag wil ik ook mijn steentje bijdragen, en daarom heb ik gevraagd hoe wij ‘chequelozen’ vanuit het buitenland geld kunnen doneren. De familie van Libby heeft mij laten weten bezig te zijn met een PayPal-account, voor veilige donaties via je bank of met een credit card. Zodra ik hierover meer informatie heb, deel ik die met jullie.

Ondertussen kijk ik naar mijn vader, denk ik aan Libby, en tel ik mijn zegeningen. De gewoonste dagelijkse dingen kunnen zij niet doen. Ik mopper soms op rotklusjes, terwijl ze mij eigenlijk totaal geen moeite kosten.

Ik realiseer me nu weer heel goed hoe blij ik mag zijn dat ik genoeg geld kan verdienen om het te delen met mensen die het harder nodig hebben. Dat ik mijn kleren kan strijken, de vuilniszak wegbrengen, en mijn eigen bips kan afvegen :-).

Ik heb er een gedichtje over geschreven in het Engels, dat kunnen jullie hieronder lezen. Ik hoop dat het jullie inspireert om ook gul te zijn voor Libby, en in een moeite door misschien wel een prachtige quilt te winnen!

I heard about Libby Lehman‘s severe stroke through The Quilt Show, of which I am a member. In a way the news hit me personally.

I had promised myself to take a class from her in when I am finally rid of my tennis/golfers elbow, to celebrate! I think her Threadplay is stunning, and she is my favorite instructor on The Quilt Show.

Secondly, my Dad is left mostly paralyzed by a severe stroke. So Libby’s condition, which you can follow through Caring Bridge, has been on my mind for the past weeks.

The Quilt Show (find the tab ‘Help Libby’) has launched a fund raiser for Libby’s medical bills. The therapy she needs is only covered for a small part by her medical insurance. For the most part the family has to pay for the therapy, and that is going to cost a lot of money, probably for years to come.

Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson have both donated a quilt to raffle, in exchange for sending a cheque to Libby’s family.

I, too, would like to make a contribution, so I asked how us ‘cheque-less’ can donate money from abroad. The family has let me know they are setting up a PayPal account, for safe donations through the bank or with a credit card. As soon as I have more information on that, I will share it with you.

In the meantime I look at my Dad, I think about Libby, and count my blessings. The simplest of daily things, they just cannot do. I am sometimes complaining about small chores, while in fact they are no trouble at all for me.

Once again, I realize very well how lucky I am to be able to make my own money, enough that I can share with those who need it more. That I can iron my clothes, or take out the trash, and wipe my own butt :-).

I wrote a poem about it, that you can read above this post. I hope it will inspire you to be generous to Libby as well. And who knows, you may win a beautiful quilt while doing so!
