- Heel kleine restjes in
- geel (eidooier)
- rood (piment olijf)
- Sashings:
- 17 inch x 3,5 inch [43,2 cm. x 8,9 cm.] of gelijkwaardig, lichte stof.
- 14 inch x 3,5 inch [35,6 cm. x 8,9 cm.] of gelijkwaardig, donkere stof.
- Totaal aantal gebruikte charms in mijn quilt: 35 (+ restjes)
In totaal dus ca. 57 cm. x 66 cm. [22 x 26 inches].

Today is 1 August 2012, the 2nd anniversary of this blog! I had hoped to finish the series on the Food BOM Quilt with one final post, but I decided to cut it up for two posts after all. (This blog is getting messy this way, I have more ‘unfinished’ posts that are awaiting follow-up way too long. Sorry!)
Today I am giving the info on the fabrics used and the materials needed. In the second post I will explain how I assembled and finished the quilt, especially the border.
Dimensions
- The quilt finishes approximately 14.5 x 18 inches [ca. 37 x 46 cm.]
- The blocks are 3 inches square [ca. 7.6 cm.].
- The sashings finish at 3 inches x 0.5 inch [ca. 7.6 x 1.3 cm.]
- The corner stones are 0.5 inch square [ca. 1.3 cm.].
- The quilt center, including the sash border, measures 11 inches x 14.5 inches [ca. 28 cm. x 37 cm.]
- The borders around it are a little less than 1.75 inches wide [ca. 4.4 cm.]
- The horizontal borders are 1.75 x 11 inches [ca. 4.4 x 28 cm.]
- The vertical borders are 1.75 inch x 14.5 inches. [ca. 4.4 x 37 cm.]
- The binding was intended to be a quarter inch wide [a little over 6 mm.], but turned out almost 3/8 of an inch [8 mm.].
As the pictures show, in making this quilt, I did not follow my design strictly. Apart from the mirror image blocks (mistake), and the different placement of colors and blocks, the border is different.
For the colors, and the placement of patches and the width of the border, I just went with what my fabrics provided, instead of following the pattern.
Picking the fabrics
For this quilt I used my ample stash of charm squares. A charm is 5 x 5 inches [ca. 12.5 cm.], so plenty large as background fabric for a 3 x 3 inch block.
For the sashings, the binding and the backing, I used larger scraps of fabric.
I started with picking the fabrics for the appliqué circles. I picked mostly solid fabrics, in realistic colors for the food they are supposed to be. I used charms as well to cut out the solid patches, but a small scrap (minimum of a circle with 2.5 inch [6.5 cm.] diameter) will do.
I continued the circle theme of the blocks in the background and border fabrics. From all my piles of charm sets, I pulled the fabrics with dots, circles and round elements. When I saw that I had more than enough for this small quilt, I made a color selection.
The fabrics in warm colors were used for the backgrounds and corner stones in the center part.
The cool colors were used in the border.
To add a little ‘punch’ to this pastel colored quilt, I used black/white fabrics for the sashings and the binding.
How much fabric do you need?
- Circles: 11 or 12 charms, or 12 scraps of minimum 2.5 inch diameter, including 0.25 inch seam allowance [6.5 cm. diameter].
- In colors of Apple, Cherry, Tomato, Orange, Salami, Meatball, Donut, Cookie, Olive, Fish, Egg and Mozzarella.
- For Egg and Mozzarella together, I used only one white charm.
- Fish: If you use a small scrap for the Fish, remember that, after making the circle, you need a little fabric for the head and the tail.
- Very tiny scraps in
- yellow (egg yolk)
- red (pimento olive)
- green (tomato crown, cherry stem, apple leaf)
- brown (apple stem).
- Background: 12 charms, or 12 scraps of minimum 3.5 x 3.5 inches [8.9 cm], that is including 0.25 inch seam allowance all around.
- Cornerstones: 1 charm, or 1 scrap of minimum 4 x 5 inches [ca. 10.2 cm. x 12.7 cm.], for 20 cornerstones of 1 inch [2.54 cm] square each, (including 0.25 inch seam allowance all around).
- Borders: Minimum 8 charms or scraps totaling the same amount of fabric. For a little more variety in color and print, I used 11 different charms. That will leave you with some waste or small scraps.
- Sashings:
- A sashing measures 1 x 3.5 inches [2.54 cm. x 8.9 cm.], including 0.25 inch seam allowance all around.
For 31 sashings in one color, you need:
- Minimum 31 x 3.5 inches [ca. 78.8 cm. x 8.9 cm.] or equivalent.
Because I did not have enough fabric in one color for all sashings, I split them in 17 lighter sashings in the center, and a darker sash border of 14 sashings around the center. For that, you need a minimum of:
- 17 x 3.5 inches [43,2 cm. x 8,9 cm.] or equivalent, lighter colored fabric.
- 14 x 3.5 inches [35,6 cm. x 8,9 cm.] or equivalent, darker colored fabric.
If you use charms for (multicolored) sashings:
- If you really have to skimp on fabric, and if the print allows you to cut sashings in different directions, you can (just!) get 5 sashings vertically, and one more horizontally, which makes a total of 6 per charm. That way you need 5 charms for 30 sashings + one small scrap for the final sashing.
- If you calculate safely, you can get 4 sashings in the same direction from one charm, so you need 8 charms for 31 sashings.
- Total number of charms used in my quilt: 35 (+ scraps)
- Binding: I skimped on fabric, and used four separate, straight grain strips of a single layer of fabric, to bind the quilt. You can adapt (increase) the amount of fabric for the binding technique and width of your choice. With the finished size of the quilt, you can calculate how much fabric you need.
- You will need at least (for the binding):
- 2 strips of 1.25 inch wide x 19 inches long [3.2 cm. x 48.3 cm.] (vertical sides)
- 2 strips of 1.25 inch wide x 15 inches long [3,2 cm. x 38,1 cm.] (horizontal sides).
- Backing: In order to have plenty of grip around the edges of the quilt, for quilting, I took ca. 4 inches extra all around for the backing and the batting. That makes a total of 22 x 26 inches [ca. 57 cm. x 66 cm.].
- Optional: fabric for a hanging sleeve or something like that.
- Optional: Special fabric for a label.
- Batting: I used a leftover piece of thin, 100% cotton batting, 22 x 26 inches [57 x 66 cm.].
Further used/required
- Freezer Paper or plain paper, for printing the patterns.
- A light source to use behind the patterns and fabric, for tracing the text and placing the appliqué pieces on the background.
- Perfect Circle Templates (by Karen Kay Buckley), or template material for making your own circular templates.
- Sizing and a small brush, for making the circles.
- An iron.
- Fusible web (I used Vliesofix) for ironing the smallest appliqué shapes to the background fabric.
- Appliqué glue pen or pins, for securing the circles to the fabric temporarily.
- Embroidery thread for the text, + matching needle. I recommend a dark, solid color of thread.
- Invisible thread for machine appliqué and machine quilting, + matching needle.
- Thin thread for hand appliqué, + matching needle.
- Decorative quilting /embroidery threads for visibly sewing down the smallest appliqué shapes, and for quilting the borders.
- Piecing thread for quilt assembly, + matching needle.
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat, and/or scissors.
- Optional: buttons and/or beads for embellishing blocks, like the Cookie and Donut.
You will find all patterns and previous posts here.
