De  Club EQ Challenge van April 2012 was: Halfvierkant driehoeken (HST’s); ontwerp een quilt die voornamelijk bestaat uit (blokken met) HST’s.

De simpelste vormen zijn het meest veelzijdig in patchwork, dus inspiratie genoeg. Ik wilde quilts ontwerpen die er goed uitzien als je ze van restjes maakt, en dit zijn ze geworden. 

Voor de Overlapping Pinwheel Quilt heb ik zelf een blok getekend met vijf pinwheels, waarvan de middelste de vier in de hoeken overlapt. Ik heb het blok zo ingekleurd dat het lijkt of de middelste gele pinwheel transparant over de roze en de rode heenligt.

Dat blok heb ik op de punt gezet, met sashings ertussen. In de cornerstones heb ik kleine groene pinwheelblokjes geplaatst. Voor de sashings heb ik een blok getekend met een blauwe pinwheel in het midden van de sashing.

Het is een fris en vrolijk ontwerp geworden, heel geschikt voor een kinderkamer.

Baskets and Mosaic Quilt

Voor de Mandjes en Mozaïek Quilt heb ik een mandjesblok uit de EQ Libraries gebruikt, ook op de punt.

Het ‘achtergrondblok’ zit misschien ook wel in de EQ Libraries, maar ik heb hem gemaakt door in het mandjesblok een paar lijnen door te trekken. Dat is makkelijker en sneller dan een blok vinden met precies hetzelfde raster.

Dit quiltontwerp heb ik met stoffen ingekleurd voor het echte ‘scrappy’ effect.

Met Inklingo zijn HST’s helemaal eenvoudig en supersnel te maken met de naaimachine, en ze zijn in heel veel maten beschikbaar. Lees via deze pagina ook Linda’s geïllustreerde ‘Triangle Tips’ pdf’s, en bekijk de video hieronder (alles in het Engels).

Overlapping Pinwheels Quilt

The April 2012 Club EQ Challenge was: Half Square Triangles (HST’s); design a quilt that uses mostly HST’s.

The simplest shapes are the most versatile in patchwork, so plenty of inspiration. I wanted to design quilts that look good scrappy, and I came up with these.

For the Overlapping Pinwheel Quilt I designed a block with five pinwheels, with the center one overlapping the four in the corners. I colored the block so that the yellow pinwheel appears to be transparent on top of the red and the pink ones.

I set this block on point, with sashings. In the cornerstones I put small green pinwheel blocks. For the sashings I drafted a block with a blue pinwheel in the center.

This design turned out fresh and cheerful, very suitable for a child’s room.

Baskets and Mosaic Quilt

For the Baskets and Mosaic Quilt I used a basket block from the EQ Libraries, also on point.

The background block may be found in the EQ Libraries as well,  but I made it by extending a few lines from the basket block. That is quicker and easier than finding a block with the same grid.

I colored this quilt with fabrics for the real scrappy effect.

Vandaag laat ik een quiltontwerp zien met een van Linda’s meest recente Inklingo collecties patroondelen, gelijkzijdige (60 graden) driehoeken met zijden van 2 inch en van 4 inch. Dit ontwerp heb ik in februari 2012 gemaakt voor de EQ7/Inklingo quiltontwerpwedstrijd, maar ik kreeg het niet op tijd af voor de deadline, dus hij is niet ingezonden.

Het ontwerp is geïnspireerd op Sarah Fielke‘s ‘Apricot Delight’, dat weer een reproductie is van een antieke quilt. ‘Apricot Delight’ stond op de cover van het Australische quiltmagazine Down Under Quilts nr. 122, uit juli 2008. Als je een gratis internetabonnement hebt op dit blad kun je het online bekijken in de digitale archieven.

Mijn quiltontwerp is helemaal Inklingobaar, en wordt 80 inch [203,2 cm.] x 100 inch [254 cm.], als je hem maakt met 2 inch driehoeken, 2 inch zeshoeken en 2 inch ruiten. Dit is nu eens een ontwerp dat ik van plan ben te maken. Ooit… Met ‘oude’ overhemden van De Heer Des Huizes. Dan zullen de kleuren wel anders worden, want hij draagt vooral veel lichtblauwe overhemden.

Nou, nadat ik hier mijn creativiteit, mijn inspiratie en mijn toekomstplannen met jullie heb gedeeld, nu dan een paar Echt Belangrijke dingen:

Today I am showing a quilt design that uses one of Linda’s recently released Inklingo collections of shapes, the 2 and 4 inch 60 degree triangles. I made this design in February 2012 for the EQ7/Inklingo quilt design contest, but I did not get to finish it before the deadline, so it was never entered.

The design is inspired by Sarah Fielke‘s ‘Apricot Delight’, which in its turn is a reproduction of an antique quilt. ‘Apricot Delight’ was on the cover of Australian magazine Down Under Quilts issue 122, from July 2008. If you have a free digital subscription to this magazine, you can view it online in the digital archives.

This quilt is completely Inklingoable, and will be 80 x 100 inches if you make it with 2 inch triangles, 2 inch hexagons and 2 inch diamonds. Now this is one design I intend to make. Some day… With ‘old’ shirts from The Gentleman of The House (DHDH, in Dutch). The colors will be different, because he mainly wears light blue shirts.

Valentine Quilt Design

Ok, ik weet het, het is natuurlijke commerciële onzin etc, maar… toch een Valentijnspost ;-)

Omdat Jillian zo’n leuk 6 inch [15.24 cm.] hartjesblok op haar blog Dakota Essence heeft gezet, kon ik het niet laten om daar iets mee te doen, en het meteen maar weer een beetje te veranderen.

Mijn versie gebruikt niet alleen de Inklingo 1,5 inch HST’s en 3 inch HST’s (te vinden in o.a. de collectie Half Square Triangles (HST) 00B met 12 maten halfvierkant driehoekjes), maar,

in plaats van een rechthoek van 3 x 6 inch (afgewerkte maat), die je zelf moet uitmeten, naai je in mijn versie de rechthoeken door 3 rechthoeken van 1 x 6 inch (uit de Inklingo 1 inch Log Cabin collectie) aan elkaar te naaien.

In het quiltje hierboven worden deze blokken afgewisseld met hartjes waarin de Logs, van dezelfde breedte, schuin zijn verwerkt. Die kun je dus niet volgens Jillian’s instructies maken, maar ik vond het wel een leuke variatie om even te laten zien.

Omdat ik voornamelijk geïnteresseerd ben in het ‘eten’-deel van romantiek, heb ik deze hartjes zo in een quiltje gezet dat het net een doosje bonbons lijkt. Valentijnsdag, mjammie!

Yes, I know, commercial rubbish and such, but… a Valentine’s post anyway ;-)

Because Jillian put such a cute 6 inch Heart Block on her blog Dakota Essence, I could not resist doing something with it, and changing it a little while I was at it.

My version does not only use the Inklingo 1.5 inch HST’s and 3 inch HST’s (in the collection Half Square Triangles (HST) 00B  with 12 sizes of HST’s), but,

instead of a 3 x 6 inch (finished size) rectangle that you have to measure yourself, in my version you piece the rectangles together from 3 rectangles, each 1 x 6 inches (from the Inklingo 1 inch Log Cabin Collection).

In the quilt above, these blocks are alternated with hearts with diagonally placed Logs of the same width. You can’t make these with Jillian’s instructions, but I liked this version enough to show it anyway.

Because I am mainly interested in the food part of romance, I set these hearts in a quilt to look like a box of chocolates. Valentine’s Day, yummy!

Club EQ Challenge Designs December 2011

Old Dutch Maid's Quilt, design with Old Maid's Ramble blocks and Mosaic No.19 Variation blocks alternating, set on point

De december Club EQ challenge was een goede oefening voor het ontwerpen van Inklingo quilts, en dus voor de Inklingo-quiltontwerpwedstrijd ‘Love the Lines’. De opdracht was om een quilt te ontwerpen met voorgeschreven patroondelen in vaste maten. Het gaat om driehoeken, vierkanten en rechthoeken met zijden van 6 inch of 3 inch om 12 inch blokken mee te maken. De delen die ik gebruikt heb zijn er allemaal als Inklingo patroondeel.

De quilt hierboven bestaat uit twee blokken uit de EQ Libraries met driehoeken en vierkanten, nl. Mosaic no.19 Variation en Old Maid’s Ramble. Ik zie hem voor me in restjes van traditioneel Hollandse rode en blauwe ruitjes, afgewisseld met klederdracht-zwart. Daarom heb ik dit ontwerp Old Dutch Maid’s Quilt genoemd.

De twee blokken staan op de punt, en om en om. Het geeft het effect van een groter vierkant blok met een ster in het midden en zaagtandranden langs de buitenkanten van het blok. Je kunt deze blokken eenvoudig zelf maken met Inklingo. Voor 12 inch blokken zijn de gebruikte patroondelen:

Voor het blok met de ster:

• 6 inch vierkant. 1 per blok. In de collecties On-Point setting 6 inch, Feathered Star 20 inch en Drunkard’s Path 6 inch.
• 3 inch halfvierkant driehoeken (HST). 16 per blok. O.a. in de Storm at Sea 9 inch collectie.
• 6 inch QST? Nee: 4,24 inch HST! 4 per blok. 

Als je naar het vierkante blok op de punt kijkt, zou je als laatste patroondeel een 6 inch QST (kwartvierkant driehoek) verwachten. Dat patroondeel is er (nog) niet in Inklingo.

Precies dezelfde driehoek met een andere draadrichting is er wel, nl. de 4.24 inch HST. Deze zit ook in de collectie On-Point Setting 6 inch. Als je een iets andere werkwijze volgt dan het maken van de losse sterblokken op de punt, kun je de twee aangrenzende QST’s uit twee verschillende blokken combineren tot een vierkant onderdeel bestaande uit 4,24 inch HST’s, met de goede draadrichting.

Voor het blok met de kleine driehoekjes:

• 4,24 inch HST (zie hierboven), 4 per blok. 
• 2,12 inch HST in de Storm at Sea 9 inch collectie. 40(!) per blok.
• 3 inch QST. 8 per blok (op de hoeken). In de download collectie met 12 maten QST, TRI QST 00B.

De tweede quilt (onderaan) is eenvoudiger. Ik heb het blok zelf getekend met patroondelen die precies aan de opdracht voldoen, maar ik vermoed dat iemand dit al weleens eerder bedacht heeft. Omdat ik dit ontwerp wat ‘jeugdiger’ vind, heb ik dit ontwerp ‘Young Dutch Maid’s Quilt’ genoemd.

De gebruikte patroondelen voor 12 inch blokken zijn:

• 4,24 inch vierkant. 1 per blok. In de collectie download Squares ooB.
• 3 inch HST. 12 per blok. O.a. in de Storm at Sea 9 inch collectie.
• 3 inch vierkant. 8 per blok (twee naast elkaar vormen samen een 3 x 6 inch rechthoek). O.a. in de Storm at Sea 9 inch collectie. 

Download en lees Linda Franz’ gratis Triangle Tips [Engels] voor je een van deze blokken gaat maken. Dat bespaart je een hoop tijd, omdat ze hierin laat zien hoe je maar de helft van de driehoeken hoeft te printen, en ze supersnel kunt naaien.

Je kunt alledrie de blokken ook als 6 inch blokken maken, alle patroondelen zijn in Inklingo beschikbaar. Halveer dan de maten van de patroondelen, en kijk in de Inklingo Index of Shapes in welke collecties ze zitten.

Young Dutch Maid's Quilt

The December Club EQ challenge was good practice for designing Inklingo quilts, and for the Inklingo quilt design contest ‘Love the Lines’. The challenge was to design a quilt with certain shapes in fixed sizes. The shapes are triangles, squares and rectangles with 3 inch or 6 inch sides, for 12 inch blocks. The shapes I used are all available as Inklingo shapes.

The quilt at the complete top of this post is made with two blocks from the EQ Libraries with triangles and squares, namely Mosaic no.19 Variation and Old Maid’s Ramble. I could see this quilt made of scraps of Dutch traditional fabrics in red, blue and black, like the ones used in our ‘national costumes’. Sometimes you can still see elderly ladies in their regional traditional dress. That’s why I called this design ‘Old Dutch Maid’s Quilt’.

The blocks are alternated in an on-point set. This gives the effect of a larger square block with a star in the center and with sawtooth edges. You can easily make these blocks with Inklingo. For 12 inch blocks the shapes you need are:

For the Star block:

• 6 inch square. 1 per block. In the collections On-Point Setting 6 inch, Feathered Star 20 inch and Drunkard’s Path 6 inch.
• 3 inch half square triangle (HST). 16 per block. A.o. in the Storm at Sea 9 inch collection.
• 6 inch QST? No: 4.24 inch HST! 4 per block. 

If you look at the square block on point, you would expect a 6 inch quarter square triangle (QST) as the last shape. That shape is not (yet) available in Inklingo.

Exactly the same triangle, only with different grain, is available, nl. the 4.24 inch HST. This is in the collection On-Point Setting 6 inch. If you follow a different working order than making the separate on point blocks, you can combine the two adjoining QST’s from both different blocks into one square unit made of 4.24 inch HST’s, with the correct grain. 

For the block with all the triangles:

• 4.24 inch HST (see above), 4 per block. 
• 2.12 inch HST. 40(!) per block. In the Storm at Sea 9 inch collection.
• 3 inch QST. 8 per block (on the corners). In the download collection with 12 sizes of QST, TRI QST 00B.

The second quilt is simpler. I drafted the block myself with shapes that match the assignment, but I suspect I am not the first one with this idea, so it is possible this block already has a name. Because I think this design is a little more ‘youthful’ than the first, I named it ‘Young Dutch Maid’s Quilt’.

The shapes used for 12 inch blocks are:

• 4.24 inch square. 1 per block. In the collection Squares ooB.
• 3 inch HST. 12 per block. A.o. in the Storm at Sea 9 inch collection.
• 3 inch square. 8 per block (two adjoining squares form a 3 x 6 inch rectangle). A.o. in the Storm at Sea 9 inch collection. 

Download and read Linda Franz’s free Triangle Tips before you start making any of these blocks. It will save you a lot of time, because she shows you how you only need to print half of the triangles, and how to piece them very quickly.

You can also make these three blocks as 6 inch blocks. All the shapes are available in Inklingo collections. Just halve the sizes of the shapes, and check the Inklingo Index of Shapes for the collections in which to find them.

Nine Patches and Pinwheels, very Inklingoable

En dan hier alle benodigde informatie over het maken van een derde ontwerp (niet ingezonden) voor de Club EQ Challenge van mei 2011. Ik vind hem zelf erg mooi. Hij is rustig en heeft volgens mij een tijdloze aantrekkingskracht.

Deze quilt is heel eenvoudig te maken, je gebruikt maar twee patroondelen, een vierkant en een driehoek! De driehoek is een halfvierkant driehoek (HST). De maat van de driehoek (bijv. 1 inch HST) is de helft van de maat van het vierkant (bijv. 2 inch). Je nine patch blokken worden in dat geval 6 inch.

Je kunt in de Inklingo Index of Shapes zien hoeveel combinaties er dan mogelijk zijn, want er zijn al heel veel vierkanten en driehoeken beschikbaar, en er komen nog steeds nieuwe maten bij.

Als je een van de Storm at Sea collecties hebt kun je deze quilt zo maken. Die bevatten nl. allemaal een HST en vierkant in de juiste verhouding. Het gaat om de patroondelen G (HST) en C (vierkant).

Het printen voor deze quilt is kipsimpel en supersnel. Voor de kleine pinwheels kun je hele vellen driehoekjes printen van de lichtste stof. Je legt de donkerste stof eronder zonder te printen, en stikt zo de benodigde naailijnen door. Daarna knip je de genaaide setjes los. Hoe je dit precies doet staat beschreven (in het Engels) en geïllustreerd in Linda Franz’ gratis download ‘Triangle Tips’.

Je kunt op een vergelijkbare manier alleen de lichte stof voor de vierkantjes printen en de donkere stof er ongeprint aan vastnaaien en daarna losknippen. Let er wel op dat je alleen de benodigde naailijnen naait! Anders krijg je keurig gevoerde losse vierkantjes :-)

Omdat er zoveel verschillende maten patroondelen zijn waarmee je de blokken voor deze quilt met Inklingo kunt maken, geef ik deze keer geen afmetingen. Je kunt eenvoudig meer of minder blokken maken voor een quilt op jouw gewenste formaat. 

In mijn ontwerp heb ik horizontaal en verticaal een oneven aantal blokken gebruikt.

De witte randen en de binnenste rode rand zijn even breed als de gebruikte vierkanten. De buitenste rode bies is even breed als de driehoekjes.

Als je deze quilt gaat maken, begin dan met het downloaden en printen van Linda Franz’ handige projecthulpje, Monkey’s Cheat Sheet. Vul deze in en noteer de benodigde hoeveelheden handig bij elkaar. In je Inklingo-collectie staat aangegeven hoeveel stof je nodig hebt voor het printen van het benodigde aantal patroondelen. Je moet daar dan zelf nog de hoeveelheden voor de randen (en de afwerkbies en de achterkant) bij optellen.

Here I am giving you the information you need to make my third design (not entered) for the May 2011 Club EQ Challenge. I like this design very much, it is calm and I like to think its appeal is timeless.

This is a very simple quilt to make, it only uses two pattern pieces, one square and one triangle! The triangle is a Half Square Triangle (HST). Its size (e.g. 1 inch) is half of the size of the square (e.g. 2 inches). In this case your nine patch blocks will be 6 inches.

In the Inklingo Index of Shapes you can see how many combinations are possible already, because a lot of HST’s and squares are available, and still new sizes are being added.

If you have one of the Storm at Sea collections you can make this quilt, because each of them contains a HST and a square in the right ratio. They are the shapes G (HST) and C (square).

Printing for this quilt is supersimple and superfast. For the small pinwheels you can print entire sheets of triangles of the lightest fabric. When machine piecing, you put the darker fabric underneath without printing lines first, and you stitch on the necessary stitching lines just like that. Afterwards you cut the pieced sets apart. Detailed, illustrated instructions are in Linda Franz’ free download with Triangle Tips.

In a comparable way you can print only the light fabric for the squares and piece it to the dark fabric, unprinted, and cut apart after stitching. Make sure you only stitch on the necessary sewing lines, or you will end up with neatly lined single squares :-)

Because there are so many different sizes in which you can make the blocks for this quilt with Inklingo, I am not giving dimensions this time. You can easily make more or less blocks to make a quilt in the size you want.

I used an uneven number of blocks horizontally and vertically.

The white borders and the inner red border are as wide as the squares used. The outside red border is as wide as the triangles.

If you are going to make this quilt, start by downloading and printing Linda Franz’ handy project planner, Monkey’s Cheat Sheet. Fill it out and note everything you require in one place. In your Inklingo collection you will find how much fabric you need for printing the amount of pattern shapes you need. All you have to do is add the yardage for the strips and borders (and binding and backing).
