De opdracht voor oktober 2011 voor de Club EQ Challenge was om een quilt te ontwerpen met een bepaald palet herfststoffen. Herstkleuren kunnen zeker warm en sfeervol zijn, maar ik hou meer van frisse, zoete en felle kleuren. En ik ontwerp bij voorkeur ook niet in stoffen, dat leidt voor mij af van de vormen en de lijnen. Dus het was wel weer echt een uitdaging om hier iets van te maken dat mij beviel.

Ik heb een nieuw quiltontwerp gemaakt, en het ontwerp van mijn vorige post, met Drunkard’s Path blokken, ook ingestuurd, deze keer ingekleurd met de herfststoffen. (Alle plaatjes staan helemaal onderaan, je kunt erop klikken voor een vergroting.)

Voor het eerste ontwerp, Fall Dance with a Touch of Spring, heb ik eerst maar eens even in mijn EQ Libraries gezocht naar blokken met Fall (herfst) in de naam. Het blok in het midden, met de bloem, heet Fall Dance [Herfstdans]. Het blok in de rand is uit BlockBase, en heet Spring and Fall [Lente en Herfst]. Vandaar de naam van de quilt ‘Herfstdans met een snufje Lente’.

Om nog iets van de print van de stoffen te laten zien in deze kleine plaatjes, heb ik de blokafmetingen behoorlijk klein gesteld in EQ, veel kleiner dan je ze in het echt zou maken. EQ laat de print van de stof namelijk exact op schaal zien in je blok. Dat is geweldig, want daarmee kun je precies zien hoe je blok en quilt uiteindelijk worden met een bepaalde stof. Het nadeel is dat er op een klein plaatje van een hele quilt niets van het stofdessin overblijft. Door de blokmaten te verkleinen, vergroot je de stofdessins in het plaatje.

En ik kon het natuurlijk niet laten om het ontwerp hier ook nog even te laten zien in heel andere kleurtjes!

Als laatste wil ik hier ook nog even wat vertellen over hoe ik het Drunkard’s Path ontwerp heb gemaakt. Ik ben begonnen met een DP blok uit de EQ Libraries. Daar heb ik de Serendipity Block Tool Shrink & Flip op losgelaten.

Met deze EQ7 functie verklein je je blok, en zet je het vier keer in een nieuw blok. Daarbij kun je je oorspronkelijke blok draaien op verschillende manieren. In de rand zie je een van de blokken met vier DP units die ik zo heb gemaakt.

Hetzelfde grapje kun je vervolgens weer uithalen met je nieuw gemaakte blokken. Dan krijg je dus DP blokken met 16 units, zoals die in het midden. Je hoeft dus niet echt geniaal creatief te zijn om het traditionele DP patroon een heel nieuwe twist te geven. (Al ben ik dat natuurlijk wel ;-))

The challenge for Club EQ, October 2011, was to design quilts with a specific palette of Fall fabrics. Autumnal colors can be very warm and atmospheric, but I prefer fresh, sweet and bright colors. And I usually don’t design with fabrics because to me it distracts from the shapes and lines of the design. So, to me this was another real challenge, but in the end I could make something I was satisfied with.

I made a new quilt design, and I also entered the design from my previous post, with Drunkard’s Path blocks, but colored with fall fabrics.

For the first design, Fall Dance with a Touch of Spring, I searched the EQ (linked) libraries for blocks with Fall in the name. The block with the flower is named Fall Dance. The block in the border is from BlockBase, and named Spring and Fall. Hence the name of the quilt.

To show something of the fabric prints, I set the block size in EQ quite small, much smaller than you would actually make them. I did that because EQ shows the fabric print exactly to scale in your blocks, which is great, because it allows you to see exactly how your blocks and quilts will turn out with a certain fabric. Downside is, that on a small picture of an entire quilt, the fabric design is lost. By using smaller block sizes, you are enlarging the fabric prints in the picture.

And of course, I had to show you this design in totally different colors as well! (You can click any picture for an enlargement)

Finally, I would like to explain a little about how I made the Drunkard’s Path design. I started with a DP block from the EQ Libraries. I let the Serendipity Block Tool, Shrink & Flip loose on that.

With this EQ7 function you shrink your block, and repeat it four times in a new block. While doing that, you can flip the original block in several ways in the new block. In the border you can see one of the blocks with four DP units I created this way.

The fun thing is, you can repeat this Shrink & Flip on the new blocks you created. That produced DP blocks with 16 units, like those in the quilt center. So, you don’t actually have to be a creative genius to give the traditional DP pattern a whole new twist. (Although I am, of course ;-))

Inklingo’s Linda Franz heeft weer twee superbruikbare collecties patroondelen uitgebracht, nl. de On-Point collecties. Deze bevatten de driehoeken die je nodig hebt om je vierkante blokken op de punt (on-point) in je quilt te verwerken. De collectie is er voor blokken in de standaardmaten 4,5 inch [11,4 cm.] en 6 inch [15,2 cm.].

Als je standaardmaat blokken op de punt zet moet je de randen recht afmaken met ‘rare maten’ driehoeken. Die zijn lastig af te meten, maar dat hoeft met Inklingo dus niet meer. Alleen maar printen, rechtstreeks op je stof, en snijden op de lijntjes. De collecties bevatten ook de vierkanten in 4,5 en 6 inch, voor degenen die de naailijnen goed kunnen gebruiken. En als bonus bevatten beide collecties elk nog een appliqué motief.

Ik ben erg blij met deze collecties, want ik ben dol op On-Point settings voor quilts. Ik laat hier vier voorbeelden zien die ik heb ontworpen in EQ7. In deze quilts heb ik de 3 inch Inklingo Drunkard’s Path blokken gecombineerd met de 6 inch On-Point patroondelen.

In de onderschriften staat per ontwerp welke patroondelen ik gebruikt heb. Het middendeel van alle quilts, binnen de eerste rand, meet 50,9 inches vierkant [129,3 cm.]. De DP randen zonder extra strips zijn ca. 8,5 inch [21,5 cm.] breed.

Inklingo’s Linda Franz has issued two super useful collections of shapes, the On-Point Collections. These contain the triangles you need to put your square blocks in a quilt on-point. There is a collection for the standard sizes of 4.5 inch and 6 inches.

If you put standard size blocks on-point, you have to make the edges straight with triangles in ‘weird sizes’. They are tricky to measure, but with Inklingo you don’t have to anymore. Just print directly on your fabric, and cut on the lines. The collections also have squares in 4.5 and 6 inches, for those who like to use the sewing lines. And as a bonus, each collection also has an appliqué motif.

I am very happy with these collections, because I love On-Point Settings for quilts. I am showing you four examples I designed in EQ7. In these quilts I combined the Inklingo 3 inch Drunkard’s Path blocks with the 6 inch On-Point shapes.

Under each picture I have written which shapes are used in the design. The center parts of each quilt, within the first border, is 50.9 inches square. The DP borders are ca. 8,5 inches wide, without extra strips.

Did you see the new downloadable FREE Drunkard’s Path Design Book yet? Inklingo’s Linda Franz has done it again! After her 3 inch Drunkard’s Path (DP) collection, she now released five more sizes, and the Design Book. It is amazing what stunning quilts you can make with DP when you combine several sizes. Go check it out, Linda shows 125 different layouts with just DP in this Design Book!

She inspired me to come up with some blocks and quilts that have DP blocks in them, too. If you make an eight pointed star, you can replace the square blocks between the points with any square block of the right size. A DP block gives a very nice effect. Maybe it already exists under another name, but I am calling my variation of the Rolling Star a Drunkard’s Star.

I checked to see what combinations I could make with available Inklingo 45 degree diamonds for the star points, and all the sizes of DP. I found you can make two types of blocks: one with two rows of diamonds in the stars, and one with four rows of diamonds in the stars. I have drafted examples in EQ7 of both types, and designed quilts with them, as you can see in the pictures above and below.

You can combine the 1.5 inch diamond (from the 20 inch Feathered Star collection) with

• the 3 inch DP, using 2 rows of diamonds in each star point. This makes a block like in the example of ca. 14.5 inches square. You would need 4.24 inch Half Square Triangles (HST) for the corner triangles. These are not available in Inklingo, but 4,25 are, on the sold out cd#2. If you have it, you could use these triangles, and cut off the excess when finally squaring up your block. If you don’t have cd #2, none of the HST’s for the corners are available as Inklingo shapes. You would have to piece the purple diamonds in the picture above out of four diamonds, same size as for the star.
• the 6 inch DP, using 4 rows of diamonds. Block size ca. 29 inches. For the corner triangles you need HST that are slightly smaller than 8.5 inches. You can use a template or rotary cut from a square, and piece an 8.5 inch triangle to the block. If necessary, cut a hair off when squaring up the block. The formula for rotary cutting a square for HST is: Finished size of HST + 7/8 inch for seam allowance. That would make a 9 3/8 inch square. If you cut that in two diagonally, you have two of your corner triangles.

The 1.75 inch diamond (from the 6 inch LeMoyne Star collection) matches up with

• the 3.5 inch DP, using 2 rows of diamonds. Block size ca. 17 inches. Corner triangles are slightly smaller than 10 inch HST.
• the 7 inch DP, using 4 rows of diamonds. Block size ca. 33.8 inches. Corner triangles are ca. 19,8 inch HST. 

Well, with all this DP inspiration in one week one could easily OD on DP. So take it easy!

Heb je het nieuwe, GRATIS te downloaden Drunkard’s Path Design Book al gezien? Inklingo’s Linda Franz heeft het  weer geflikt! Na haar 3 inch Drunkard’s Path (DP) collectie, heeft ze nu nog vijf maten DP collecties uitgebracht, en het Design Book. Het is ongelooflijk wat je voor fantastische quilts kunt maken met DP als je verschillende maten combineert. Ga het boek snel bekijken, Linda laat hierin 125 verschillende lay-outs met alleen DP zien!

Dit inspireerde mij om ook iets te doen met blokken en quilts met DP blokken erin. Als je een achtpuntige ster maakt, kun je de vierkanten tussen de sterpunten vervangen door willekeurig welk vierkant blok in de juiste maat. Een DP blok geeft een mooi effect. Misschien bestaat dit blok al onder een andere naam, maar ik noem mijn variatie van de Rolling Star een Drunkard’s Star.

Ik heb uitgezocht welke combinaties je kunt maken met de beschikbare Inklingo 45 graden ruiten voor de sterpunten, en alle maten DP. Ik kwam erachter dat je hiermee twee typen blok kunt maken: een met twee rijen ruiten in elke sterpunt, en eentje met vier rijen sterpunten in de sterren. Ik heb van allebei voorbeelden getekend in EQ7, en daarmee quilts ontworpen, die je kunt zien in de plaatjes hierboven.

Je kunt de 1,5 inch ruit (van de 20 inch Feathered Star collectie) combineren met:

• de 3 inch DP, als je 2 rijen ruiten gebruikt voor elke sterpunt. Dan krijg je een blok zoals in het voorbeeld van ca. 14,5 inch vierkant. Je hebt dan 4,24 inch halfvierkant driehoeken (HST) nodig voor de hoeken. Die zijn niet beschikbaar als Inklingo patroondeel, maar de 4,25 inch HST staat op (de uitverkochte) cd #2. Als je die hebt, kun je deze driehoeken gebruiken, en wat er eventueel uitsteekt t.o.v. de rest van het blok op het laatst afsnijden. Tenzij je cd #2 hebt, is geen van de driehoeken voor de hoeken beschikbaar als Inklingo patroondeel. De paarse ruiten in het plaatje hierboven moet je samenstellen uit vier ruiten, dezelfde als voor de ster.
• de 6 inch DP, met 4 rijen ruiten. Blokmaat ca. 29 inch. Voor de driehoeken in de hoeken heb je HST’s nodig die net iets kleiner zijn dan 8,5 inch. Je kunt een mal tekenen of snijden met een rolmes van een vierkant. Op het laatst kun je het blok dan netjes vierkant maken door nog een haartje van de hoeken af te snijden. De formule voor het bepalen van de maat van het benodigde vierkant voor HST’s is: afgewerkte maat van je HST + 7/8 inch. Je hebt dan een 9 3/8 inch vierkant nodig.

De 1,75 inch ruit (uit de 6 inch LeMoyne Star collectie) combineert met:

• de 3,5 inch DP, met 2 rijen ruiten. Blokmaat ca. 17 inch. De driehoeken op de hoeken zijn HST van net geen 10 inch.
