Meer informatie over deze blokken

Gisteren heb ik verteld hoe bruikbaar mijn My EQ Boutique blokkencollectie Inklingo Dresden Plate Pieced Variations* is voor verschillende groepen quilters. Vandaag heb ik meer goed nieuws over de blokken zelf.

Block 1 Variation

Veelzijdig

De blokken zijn gebaseerd op het werk van Linda Franz, en haar Inklingo collecties patroondelen voor Dresden Plate Basic Pieced en Dresden Plate Fancy Pieced. Vooral de Dresden Plate Fancy Pieced collectie patroondelen is geweldig veelzijdig. Daar wilde ik My EQ Boutique gebruikers ook mee laten kennismaken.

We wilden blokken selecteren die allemaal geschikt zijn voor (eenvoudige) foundation piecing, en daardoor vielen er al direct veel mogelijke Inklingo-blokken af. We hebben dit gedaan voor niet-Inklingo-quilters.

Inklingo-quilters hoeven niet te foundation piecen, want zij hebben de behulpzame lijntjes al op hun stof. Ze hebben dus keuze uit veel meer technieken, en uit veel meer patroondelen (en dus blokken).

Maar zelfs met mijn beperkte selectie van Inklingo-patroondelen, kun je elk van mijn 12 blokken op minstens 5 verschillende manieren maken.

Hoe doe je dat?

Je kunt delen van verschillende blokken combineren tot een nieuw blok. Ik heb een overzicht gemaakt van variaties op blok 12, een blok met heel simpele wieken.

Linksboven zie je blok 12 zoals hij in My EQ Boutique zit. Ik heb de wieken (of spaken) steeds hetzelfde gehouden, alleen met de rest gevarieerd. Voor de duidelijkheid heb ik ze zoveel mogelijk in alleen rood en wit gekleurd.

Block 12 Variations - Blok 12 Variaties

Dat zijn heel veel mogelijke variaties op maar 1 blok! Bedenk eens wat je nog meer kunt doen met meer kleuren en stofdessins (strepen in de spaken! fussy cutting voor de cirkels!).

Je kunt elk blok dus maken in de volgende variaties:

1. Geen ring met driehoekjes 
2. 1 ring met driehoekjes 
3. 2 ringen met driehoekjes 
4. Appliquémotief, alleen het ronde middendeel, zonder de achtergrond die het blok vierkant maakt
5. Waaierblok, maak een kwart of een half blok (met of zonder ringen met driehoekjes!).

En hiermee kun je nog verder variëren, door:

• Verandering van de stand van de ringen met driehoekjes (vergelijk bijvoorbeeld blok 8 met blokken 7 en 9)
• Licht en donker anders te verdelen in het blok
• Waaierblokken als appliquémotief te maken
• De grotere middencirkel van blok 10 te appliqueren op de andere blokken
• De kleinere middencirkel over de grotere te appliqueren. 

Block 3 Variation

Inspirerend

Gisteren heb ik al een paar opwindende inspiratiequilts laten zien met de blokken zoals My EQ Boutique ze toont. Sommige mensen waren al heel verrast dat je met die blokken zulke quilts kunt maken. Al deze variaties bieden nog veel meer inspiratie! De mogelijkheden om je eigen creativiteit hierop los te laten zijn eindeloos! 

Voordelig

De Inklingo Dresden Plate Pieced Variations My EQ Boutique collectie is dus Heel Voordelig, want je krijgt meer dan 100 patronen voor de prijs van 12 als je de hele collectie koopt. Ja, de Hollanders houden van waar voor hun geld ;-), en dat mogen andere nationaliteiten ook best weten.

Maar je kunt ook een enkel blok kopen, dus je hoeft nooit te betalen voor blokken die je niet nodig hebt.

Yesterday I told you how my My EQ Boutique Block Collection Inklingo Dresden Plate Pieced Variations* is useful to different groups of quilters. Today I have more good news about the blocks.

Versatile

The blocks are based on Linda Franz‘s work, her Inklingo Shape Collections for Dresden Plate Basic Pieced and Dresden Plate Fancy Pieced. Especially the Dresden Plate Fancy Pieced is wonderfully versatile, and I wanted to introduce that to My EQ Boutique users as well.

We wanted to select only blocks that are suitable for (simple) foundation piecing, which means many possible Inklingo blocks are not included. We did this for non-Inklingo quilters.

Block 1 Variation

Inklingo quilters do not have to foundation piece, because they already have the helpful lines on their fabric. Inklingo quilters can choose from more methods, and from many more shapes (and blocks).

But even with my limited selection of Inklingo shapes, you can make each of my 12 blocks in at least 5 different ways.

How to do this?

You can combine parts of different blocks into one new block. I made an overview of possible varieties of block 12, a block with very simple blades.

At the top left you see block 12 as it is in My EQ Boutique. I kept the blades the same throughout, and only varied the other parts. For clarity I colored all in mostly just red and white.

Block 12 Variations - Blok 12 Variaties

That’s a lot of varieties of just one block! Think what you could do with more colors and fabric prints (stripes in the blades! fussy cutting for the circles!).

If you want to make your own variations remember these options:

1. No ring of triangles
2. 1 ring of triangles
3. 2 rings of triangles
4. Appliqué motif, only the circular section, without the backgrounds that finish the block square
5. Fan Block, make a quarter or half block (either with or without triangle rings!).

And you can make more variations, by:

• Changing the rotation of the rings with triangles
• Changing the distribution of light and dark
• Using the Fan Blocks as appliqué motifs
• Using the larger center circle of block 10 for other blocks.
• Appliquéing the smaller center circle on top of the larger center circle

Block 3 Variation

Inspiring

Yesterday I already showed some exciting inspiration quilts using the blocks as My EQ Boutique shows them. Some people were very surprised that you could make quilts like that with these blocks.

All the variations above offer even more inspiration! The possibilities to let your own creativity shine are endless!

Ik heb opwindend nieuws: Ik ben de nieuwste My EQ Boutique* Designer!

Mijn eerste collectie blokpatronen ‘Inklingo Dresden Plates Pieced Variations‘ is sinds gisteren te koop in deze bijzondere patronenwebwinkel. Je kunt ze direct downloaden, en zelf (papieren) patronen of malletjes afdrukken voor deze 12 blokken (hierboven). 

Belangrijk: Dit is GEEN Inklingo-collectie Patroondelen om lijntjes op stof te printen!

Voor jou?

Ik heb deze My EQ Boutique blokkencollectie ontworpen voor drie verschillende groepen gebruikers:

1. Quilters die deze blokken willen maken zonder EQ7 of Inklingo.

Geen van beide heb je nodig om deze blokken te kunnen gebruiken. Met niets meer dan My EQ Boutique kun je je blok(ken) na het downloaden groot op je scherm bekijken, in een 4×4 setting herhalend bekijken, en zelf je patronen printen.

Print precies wat je nodig hebt, malletjes of een patroon voor foundation piecing, in elke gewenste maat (centimeters of inches). Ik geef je zelfs tips en geïllustreerde naai-instructies (in het Engels) bij je blokken.

2. Quilters met EQ7, die hun eigen quilts met deze blokken willen ontwerpen en inkleuren.

Link je My EQ Boutique collectie aan EQ7, en dan kun je zelfs nieuwe blokken tekenen door simpelweg mijn blokken aan te passen. Print malletjes of een patroon voor foundation piecing in elke gewenste maat, en laat EQ uitrekenen hoeveel stof je nodig hebt. EQ7 geeft geen naai-instructies, maar die heb je dankzij My EQ Boutique wel!

3. Quilters met de Inklingo-collectie patroondelen voor Dresden Plate Fancy Pieced en EQ7, die deze blokken in 9, 12 of 15 inch willen maken.

Ontwerp met mijn blokken je eigen quilt in EQ7, en print dan de benodigde patroondelen met Inklingo gewoon rechtstreeks op je stof. Kies je favoriete methode, hand of machine, en naai je quilt gemakkelijk en snel, dankzij de voordelen van Inklingo:

• Duidelijke naai-instructies in het Inklingo Dresden Plate Design Book,
• Lijntjes en markeringen op je lapjes. 
• De benodigde hoeveelheid stof staat aangegeven in de Inklingo pdf met je collectie patroondelen.

Dus: Iedereen kan deze mooie blokken maken, het enige wat je nodig hebt zijn de My EQ Boutique blokken. EQ7 en Inklingo zijn handig, maar niet noodzakelijk.

Kwart 9 inch Blok: Een Strik!

Er zitten blokken bij voor beginners (blok 1 t/m 6) en voor meer gevorderde quilters. In het overzicht met ‘inspiratiequilts’ zie je voorbeelden van kleine, simpele quilts, maar ook grotere, bewerkelijke quilts met de meer gevorderde blokken.

New Designer for My EQ Boutique!

I have some exciting news: I am the latest My EQ Boutique* Designer!

My first collection of blocks ‘Inklingo Dresden Plate Pieced Variations‘, is available for sale in this special online pattern shop. You can download them right now, and print your own (paper) patterns or templates for these 12 blocks (above). 

Important: This is NOT an Inklingo Shape Collection to print lines on fabric!

For you?

I designed this My EQ Boutique block collection for three different groups of users:

1. Quilters who want to make these blocks without EQ7 or Inklingo.

You don’t need either of these to be able to use these blocks. With nothing more than just My EQ Boutique, after downloading your blocks, you can zoom in, watch one in a 4×4 repeat, and print patterns yourself.

Print exactly what you need, templates or a foundation piecing pattern, in any size (inches or centimeters). I am even providing tips and illustrated sewing instructions with your blocks.

2. Quilters with EQ7, who want to design and color their own quilts with these blocks.

Link your My EQ Boutique collection to EQ7, and you can even draw new blocks, by simply adapting my blocks. Print templates or a foundation piecing pattern, in any size. Let EQ calculate yardage. EQ7 does not provide sewing instructions, but you have them thanks to My EQ Boutique!

3. Quilters with the Inklingo Collection of Shapes for Dresden Plate Fancy Pieced, and EQ7, who want to make these blocks in 9, 12 or 15 inches.

Design your own quilt, using my blocks in EQ7, and then print the necessary templates directly on your fabric with Inklingo. Pick your own favorite method, hand or machine, and sew your quilt quickly and easily, thanks to Inklingo’s advantages:

• Clear sewing instructions in the Inklingo Dresden Plate Design Book, 
• Lines and marks on your patches,
• Yardage requirements are provided in the Inklingo pdf with the Shape Collection.

So, anyone can make these beautiful blocks, all you need is the My EQ Boutique blocks. EQ7 and Inklingo are very handy, but not necessary.

Quarter 9 inch Block: a Bow!

There are blocks for beginners (block 1-6), and for more advanced quilters. In the overview of ‘inspiration quilts’ you will find examples of small, simple quilts, but also of large, elaborate quilts with the more advanced blocks.

Het is bijna niet bij te houden; Linda Franz heeft alweer een nieuw Inklingo patroon uitgebracht!

Deze keer het prachtige, en voorheen ingewikkelde, Sunflower blok. Dit patroon is nu voor quilters van alle niveaus bereikbaar geworden, dankzij Inklingo’s uitwasbare knip- en naailijntjes en markeringen. Er is een collectie voor een 12 inch [ca. 30,5 cm.] blok en voor een 6 inch [ca. 15,2 cm.] blok, en een GRATIS design book. Ga het snel downloaden, want het blijft niet gratis.

Er staan heel veel quiltontwerpen in, plus alle denkbare behulpzame informatie voor het ontwerpen en maken van je eigen Sunflower quilt. Het was nog een hele toer voor mij om met een quiltontwerp te komen dat niet in het Design Book stond, maar ik heb er toch nog 2 weten te verzinnen. Als je beide collecties combineert, kun je een dubbele Sunflower maken met de 6 inch zonnebloem binnenin de 12 inch zonnebloem, het effect is spectaculair. Ik vind het geweldig!

It is almost impossible to keep up; Linda Franz has already published a new Inklingo pattern!

This time it is the beautiful, and previously complicated, Sunflower block. This pattern is now available for quilters of all levels, thanks to Inklingo’s wash-out cutting and sewing lines and crosshairs. There is a shape collection for a 12 inch block and for a 6 inch block, and a FREE Design Book. Go download this quickly, because it will not be free forever.

There are many quilt designs in the design book, and everything you can think of to help you design and make your own Sunflower quilt. It was actually a challenge for me to present you with a quilt design that was not already in the Design Book, but I managed to make 2. If you combine both size collections, you can make a double Sunflower with the 6 inch sunflower inside the 12 inch sunflower, with spectacular effect. I love it!

Quilt Design Books – Gratis!

*Update januari 2011: De quilt design books zijn nu alleen nog gratis als je ook (binnen 60 dagen) een gerelateerde Inklingo collectie aanschaft.

Als je van plan bent om (ooit) een quilt te maken met zeshoekjes (hexagons), double wedding ring, storm at sea, winding ways of dresden plates, moet je vooral de gratis Inklingo Design Books van Linda Franz bekijken. Ze heeft er werkelijk alles aan gedaan om het je gemakkelijk te maken! Of je nu met de hand wilt naaien of met de machine, en welke methode je ook gebruikt (Inklingo of bijv. de Engelse patchworkmethode voor zeshoeken).

In de Design Books staat allerlei informatie over het ontwerpen, inkleuren, plannen, berekenen van afmetingen en benodigde stof, naaien, persen en afwerken van je quilt. De Design Books zijn alleen verkrijgbaar in het Engels, maar ze zijn gratis en gemakkelijk verkrijgbaar (gewoon via internet op te halen van de Inklingo-website). Ook als je alleen Nederlands leest zijn ze de moeite waard om te bekijken.

Waar je in ieder geval zonder Engels mee aan de slag kunt zijn de werkbladen (worksheets) om in te kleuren en om het aantal benodigde patroondelen mee te bepalen.

Er zijn op dit moment vijf Design Books die elk één patroon behandelen:

• Hexagon Quilt Design Book
• Double Wedding Ring Design Book (inclusief Pickle Dish, de variant met puntjes in de ringen)
• Dresden Plate Design Book (inclusief heel veel blokvariaties, waaronder ook prachtige onbekende blokken als Farmer’s Fancy)
• Storm at Sea Design Book
• Winding Ways Design Book

Elk boek bevat (onder meer):

• Afbeeldingen van het patroon of blok en variaties daarop
• Tips voor het snijden of knippen van de patroondelen
• Instructies voor het naaien van de blokken met de hand en de machine, en waar relevant appliqué en ronde naden
• Uitleg en voorbeelden voor het berekenen van de benodigde hoeveelheid stof voor jouw quilt
• Tips (met plaatjes) voor het persen van het blok, zodat het mooi plat ligt
• Werkbladen (worksheets) om in te kleuren, meerdere per patroon.

Ik raad je aan een Design Book dat je interesseert te downloaden (zie de Nederlandse downloadinstructies hier) en eens rustig op je beeldscherm door te bladeren met behulp van de bookmarks in Adobe Reader. Je kunt daarna besluiten of je het (gedeeltelijk) wilt printen.

Speciaal aanbevolen:

Alle Worksheets:

Hexagon Quilt Design Book, pagina’s 58 t/m 68. Niet alleen van lay-outs met zeshoeken voor bijvoorbeeld een Grandmother’s Flower Garden, maar ook met delen van zeshoeken, bijvoorbeeld ‘inner city’ blokken. (De aanduiding 13 x 19 slaat op het totaalformaat in inches van de werkbladen. Dit is 33 x 48 cm. Houd hier rekening mee bij het instellen van je printopdracht).

Dresden Plate Design Book, pagina’s 61 t/m 72. Een aantal werkbladen is bedoeld om mee te knippen en te plakken, om zo de verschillende ‘fan’ of waaiervariantenquilts te kunnen maken.

Winding Ways Design Book, pagina’s 37 t/m 73. Er zijn zoveel verschillende werkbladen dat het overzicht van de bookmarks niet op een plaatje past!

Storm at Sea Design Book, pagina’s 49 t/m 78. Er zijn varianten met alleen lijnen (unshaded) en ingekleurd met grijstinten (shaded).

Verder speciaal aanbevolen:

Double Wedding Ring Design Book: de DWR Chart. Dit is een tabel met aantallen lapjes/patroondelen per blokvariant voor diverse quiltafmetingen (in inches. Een inch is 2.54 cm.). Erg handig en tijdbesparend bij het plannen van je DWR quilt.

Dresden Plate Design Book: Bekijk vooral alle pagina’s met Examples (voorbeelden) onder de Bookmarks ‘Appliqué Dresden Plate’ en ‘Pieced Dresden Plate’. Hier staan prachtige, onbekende en soms ingewikkelde blokken tussen die ik helemaal niet met Dresden Plates associeerde. Ik houd namelijk niet zo van gewone Dresden Plates. Maar dankzij de variatieblokken is de Inklingo-collectie met ‘Fancy Pieced Dresden Plates’ nu een van mijn favorieten!

Als je de Design Books hebt bekeken, overweeg dan om een korte recensie te schrijven op de Inklingo website. Sinds kort heeft Linda de mogelijkheid toegevoegd om Inklingo-producten te waarderen met een aantal sterretjes, en deze waardering toe te lichten. Hiermee kun je andere klanten op weg helpen.

If you plan to (ever) make a quilt with hexagons, double wedding ring, storm at sea, winding ways or dresden plates, you really should take a look at Linda Franz’s Inklingo Design Books. She has gone out of her way to make it easy for you! Whether you want to piece by hand or by machine, and whichever method you use (Inklingo or e.g. English Paper Piecing for hexagons).

In the Design Books you find a lot of information for designing, colouring, planning, calculating dimensions and fabric yardage, assembling, pressing and finishing your quilt. The Design Books are free and easily available (just download from the Inklingo website). Even for someone who does not read English they are worth looking up.

Anyone can at least use the worksheets, to colour the design and count the amount of shapes needed.

Currently there are five Design Books, covering one pattern each:

• Hexagon Quilt Design Book
• Double Wedding Ring Design Book (including Pickle Dish, the variation with points in the rings)
• Dresden Plate Design Book (with very many block variations, including beautiful unknown blocks like Farmer’s Fancy)
• Storm at Sea Design Book
• Winding Ways Design Book

Each Design Book contains a.o:

• Pictures of the pattern or block and variations
• Tips for cutting the shapes
• Instructions for assembling the blocks, for piecing by hand and machine, and where relevant for appliqué and curved seams
• How-to’s and examples for calculating yardage for your quilt
• Tips (illustrated) for pressing the block, how to make it lay flat very nicely
• Worksheets to colour, several for each pattern

I recommend downloading a Design Book that interests you (click here for download instructions), and to take your time to browse through it on your computer screen, using the bookmarks in Adobe Reader. Next you can decide if you want to print (some of) it.

All Worksheets:

Hexagon Quilt Design book, pages 58 – 68. Not just layouts with hexagons for e.g. a Grandmothers Flower Garden, but also hexagon parts, like Inner City blocks. (The numbers 13 x 19 refer to the total size in inches of the worksheets. Adjust your printer settings accordingly).

Dresden Plate Design Book, pages 61 – 72. Some of the worksheets are meant to cut up and paste, to allow for fan variation quilts.

Winding Ways Design Book, pages 37 – 73. There are so many different worksheets that the list of bookmarks does not fit in my screen view!

Storm at Sea Design Book, pages 49 – 78. There are worksheets with just line drawings (unshaded) and shaded versions.

Double Wedding Ring Design Book, pages 54 – 64. For variations of the traditional DWR, but also for Pickle Dish.

Further highly recommended:

Double Wedding Ring Design Book: the DWR Chart, with numbers of patches/shapes per block for several quilt dimensions. Very useful and a great timesaver when planning your DWR quilt.

Dresden Plate Design Book: Do check all pages with Examples under the Bookmarks ‘Appliqué Dresden Plate’ and ‘Pieced Dresden Plate’. Here you find wonderful, unknown and sometimes complicated blocks that I never associated with ‘Dresden Plates’. I actually don’t really care for ordinary Dresden Plates. But thanks to all the variation blocks the ‘Fancy Pieced Dresden Plates’ Inklingo collection is now one of my favorites!
