My Separating Row Design
So, those who have been following this RAL, knew what was coming, because there was only one row left from my overview: The New Leaves and Blossom Filler Row.

My notes on this design: 2 inches high – 30 applique shapes – medium skill level – fairly quick to make. I drafted this simple appliqué block myself, based on a pieced Orange Peel block from the EQ Libraries.
My inspiration: the link with the Seasons theme
I think the name ‘New Leaves and Blossom’ says it all: this filler row represents Spring. But in a different coloring, it could be more ‘season neutral’.
About making this row
For making this row, I would use the same fusible raw edge machine applique technique as I described in my pattern for the clamshell row (as an alternative to pieced Inklingo clamshells). In short, it is appliquéing and quilting in one, after assembling your quilt sandwich.
I would place the leaf and blossom shapes on one unpieced background strip, and fuse them in place. I would only stitch the leaves down while quilting the entire sandwich, by straight stitching just inside the edges of the leaves. It is very quick and simple! If you want to take a little more time, you could also use a decorative stitch around the edges, to quilt the leaves down.

Note: You can only open the file if you have EQ7 software. You don’t need the EQ file for participating in the Row-A-Long. It is simply a bonus for those who have EQ7 and would like to play with the designs, like change the colorings and combine several rows from different designers in one quilt layout. My EQ7 tutorial: Viewing Multiple Notecards Quickly
This final subject, viewing multiple Notecards quickly, is the reason why I started to make screen recordings of EQ7 (for Mac) for my tutorials. You need to see this in motion!
I recommend you watch this video on full screen, so you will be able to clearly see the buttons on the Notecards. The video (39 seconds) has no sound, so I will talk you through what I am doing, here in writing.
I will post the video again at the end of the tutorial, so you don’t have to scroll up to watch it again, if you missed something.
I have opened an existing project file, that contains quilts and blocks.
I click on the ‘View Sketchbook’ button. → The sketchbook opens, in front of my Quilt Worktable. Part of it is on top of my Quilt Worktable.
I click (and hold) in the grey bar that says ‘Project Sketchbook’. I then drag the Project Sketchbook a bit to the right.
I click the ‘Notecard’ button. → The Quilt Notecard appears. It opens on top of the Project Sketchbook.
At the top right of the Notecard you see two icons and one button. In my previous tutorials I have shown you that the button, marked with an X, is to close the Notecard.
Today I will show you what the two icons do.
I start with the icon right next to the Closing Button, a cross formed by four arrows. When you hover your mouse over it, the cursor turns into that same cross. The four arrows indicate that you can now move the Notecard in all directions.
I hover my mouse over the arrows icon, and my cursor turns into that same icon. Next, I click and drag, moving the Notecard to the left. I release the mouse when I have the Notecard where I want it. For what we are going to do next, you want to make sure both your Sketchbook and your Notecard are in full view.
So the function of the icon with the arrows is to move your Notecard to another position on your screen.
Now, the remaining icon, the pushpin. This also works as a button, and you can use it to pin the Notecard to your screen. A pinned Notecard stays open when you close a quilt or block by selecting a new one.
Normally, the Notecard of your selected item automatically closes when you select a new quilt or block in your Sketchbook. And you have to open the Notecard every time, for each new block or quilt. But with a pinned Notecard, the Notecard stays open, and instantly shows the Notes for the newly selected item! This is a great way to review the Notes in your Sketchbook very quickly.
I am showing you two ways in which this works. But remember, the pinned Notecards work the same on every Tab in the Project Sketchbook, so what I am showing is not specific to either the Quilts Tab or the Blocks Tab, or to my settings.
On the Quilts Tab, I usually have my settings to show only one quilt in the overview. I browse my quilts in a project file by dragging the slider bar underneath the quilt preview to the right. But you could also use the arrow keys on your keyboard.
On the Blocks Tab, I am usually showing several blocks in the overview. I can quickly select blocks or colorings in a more random order that way.
So what I am doing in the video:
After I have moved the Notecard to the left, I move the cursor away from the arrows icon. It returns to its regular arrow shape.
I now move the cursor toward the pushpin icon. When it is near, the cursor turns into a hand with a pointed index finger. It indicates I can now push the pin with that little index finger.
I click the pushpin icon → It turns into a pushed pin icon.
Underneath the Quilt overview in my Sketchbook, I click and drag the slider bar to the right. → All quilts in my Sketchbook are selected, one after another. But I am not watching my Quilt previews, I am only watching my Notecard. It shows a small picture of the quilt, with my relevant Notes. And as soon as a new quilt is selected by the slider bar, the new Notecard information appears.
After I have reached the final quilt, I click the Blocks Tab in the Project Sketchbook → ThepinnedQuilt Notecarddisappears.
I click the Notecard Button → the Block Notecard for the selected block appears. Note that the Block Notecard is in the same position I dragged the Quilt Notecard to. EQ remembers that position, even when you close the relocated Notecard.
I pin the Block Notecard to my screen, by clicking the pushpin icon.
I start randomly clicking blocks in my overview. Each time I click a block, it is selected, and instantly the pinned Notecard shows its information.
I close the Project Sketchbook, by clicking the ‘Close’ button.

Additional information: The project shown in the video is my 2011 ‘Block of the Month’ project, which was a bit of a joke. I had two versions, the Dutch Delights, [Hollandse Hap] and the English Food BOM. It featured a ‘different’ appliqué block each month.

It really was the same circle each month, just with a different name embroidered above it :-). But it turned into a cute mini quilt all the same, made of only fabrics with dots and circles. You can download my EQ7 project file from this page.

My Separating Row Design
I don’t know if you noticed, but I am alternating blocks with straight lines and with curved lines every week. So, this week is a ‘straight line’ week. I am calling this the ‘Blowing Winds Row’. It is a bit different from my other rows, in that it has a center and goes in two directions from that center.
Blowing Winds Filler Row, Chevron Blocks, foundation piecing or Inklingo
My notes on this design: 20 blocks – 3 inches high – Techniques used: Machine piecing – Straight stitching only – Easy.
In my free pattern pdf, I am giving instructions for both foundation piecing and for using Inklingo™ shapes printed on fabric. This row is quicker with Inklingo™ than with foundation piecing.
I used the 3D Zig Zag Border block from the EQ Libraries for this row. Only after I designed it, as a foundation piecing row, I discovered this one could be made with Inklingo, too! So I reworked my pattern to include this option, for those who have the Celtic Solstice Shape collection.

My inspiration: the link with the Seasons theme
My filler row for this week symbolizes the winds blowing. Winds bring warmer weather in Winter, and a bit of refreshment in Summer. They carry lovely smells throughout all seasons, especially the natural smells of Spring and Fall.

My EQ7 tutorial: Editing Notecard Information
My fourth EQ7 tutorial on Notecards already, including a screen recording of EQ7 for Mac. This time, I am showing you a bit more in depth, the ways in which you can edit the Notecard information.
Before I am showing you the screen recording, there are a few things I will tell you first, because you can’t actually see it in the video:
The Notecard Notes field expands with the amount of text you type in. If you have downloaded my EQ Seasons Filler row project file, you can see I sometimes write down a lot on my Quilt or Block Notecards! If you type in a lot of text in the Notes field, you will quickly find you don’t have a good overview of your writing.
That is one of the reasons why I prefer to write longer Notecard texts in MS Word or another text editing program. You can copy text from outside EQ and paste it into the EQ Notecards.
Because I often repeat information over the notecards, I want to be able to find the relevant section quickly and just copy and paste. Within EQ, you can copy and paste text from one notecard to another notecard, but I prefer to copy from an outside text editor, and repeatedly paste the same selected text into several notecards.
Another reason why I write longer notes outside EQ, is because In the EQ Notecards, information is instantly saved as you type. This is handy, but it also means you have to be careful no to delete anything by accident. Because clicking the ‘Undo’ button (or typing in the key combination [CMD + Z] for Mac, or [CTRL + Z] for Windows machines), does not work on the Notecards!
But you can undo your previous step(s) in text editing applications like MS Word, Notepad, TextEdit, etc., so this is a safer way to work on larger texts.

When typing in the EQ Notecards, there is no need to click a ‘Save button’ or close the Notecard first, for changes to be registered. And EQ immediately refers to the updated information in the relevant fields. I point this out to you in the video, by circling my cursor around current and updated block names.
I recommend you watch the video below (1 minute and 11 seconds) on full screen, so you will be able to read the text. There is no sound, so I will talk you through what I am doing here, in writing. I will post the video again at the end of the tutorial, so you don’t have to scroll up to watch it again, in case you missed something.
I click the ‘View Sketchbook’ button > The Project Sketchbook opens.
It shows four blocks. The top left block is automatically selected. You can tell because it has a blue line around it. The selected block is ‘Unnamed’. That’s because I drafted this block myself, and the Block Notecard is still empty.
I click the Notecard button > The Block Notecard opens.
I click in the Name Field > You see a blinking cursor appear there. I type in ‘Clamshell’
I click in the Notes field > The blinking cursor appears. I type in ‘Set as 6 x 6 inch block’.
I click in the Reference field > The cursor appears, and I type in ‘Inklingoable’.
I close the Block Notecard by clicking the top right button, marked with an X.
The first block in the Block overview is still selected, and the name now reads ‘Clamshell’ (instead of ‘Unnamed’).
I click the second Clamshell block, to select it > a blue line appears around it. The block name is 181a.
I click the Notecard Button > The Block Notecard for 181a opens. This block is from BlockBase, an EQ add-on. I am showing you here you can change names and notes for Library blocks (when they are in your sketchbook).
I click the Name field, a blinking cursor appears in front of ‘181a’. I type ‘Clamshell’ in front of ‘181a’.
I click the Notes Fields and type in some random text: XXXX. Note that the entire Notes field is showing: there is no slider bar on the right.
I close the Block Notecard by clicking the top right button, marked with an X.
The second Clamshell block is still selected, you can tell by the blue line around it. The Block name now reads ‘Clamshell 181a’ (instead of ‘181a’).
Outside EQ, at the bottom of my screen, I click the TextEdit icon > TextEdit opens with an Untitled open document, with a random text, ‘Lorem Ipsum’
I click and drag to select the Lorem Ipsum text > the selected text turns blue.
I copy the text by typing in [CMD + C]. (This key combination is for a Mac, it is [CTRL + C] on a Windows machine).
I click the yellow button with a minus sign > the Untitled TextEdit document is minimized.
I click the Notecard button for the selected Clamshell Block > The Notecard opens.
I click and drag to select ‘XXXX’, because I want to replace this text with my copied text from outside EQ. > XXXX turns blue, showing it is selected.
I paste in my text by typing in [CMD + V]. (This key combination is for a Mac, it is [CTRL + V] on a Windows machine.) > ‘Lorem ipsum’ appears in my Notes field, and the cursor is at the end of the text.
A slider bar has appeared on the right of the Notes field. The height of the slider bar is an indication of the length of the Notes text. (The longer the text, the lower the slider bar).
I click and drag the slider bar up, showing the entire field from bottom to top.
I close the Block Notecard by clicking the top right button, marked with an X > The Block Notecard disappears.
I click to select the third block in the Block overview. > A blue line appears around it, and instantly the Block name beneath the Block overview changes from ‘Clamshell 181a’ into ‘Relaxed Vine with Flowers’.
I click the Notecard button > The Block Notecard opens.
The Name field reads ‘Relaxed Vine with Flowers’, in black letters.
The Library field reads ‘9 Border Blocks > Vines’. The letters are greyed out, meaning you cannot edit this text. You can’t see it in the screen recording, but if you try to click the text, you will find that does not work.
EQ automatically fills the Library Notecard field with the relevant Library name for items that are from one of the EQ Libraries (including the Libraries you add and name yourself).
I close the Block Notecard by clicking the top right button, marked with an X > The Block Notecard disappears.
I click on the ‘Close’ button to close the Project Sketchbook.

One more note: The copying and pasting of text also works to export Notes from inside EQ into to, for instance, MS Word. This is handy if you want to have quick access to, or a good overview of several notes, by e.g. keeping a printed record.

The free Circle of Hearts collection is for appliqué, and you can print its shapes on fabric in a size you specify. If you have regular cotton quilting fabric, an iron, an internet connection, an inkjet printer and a sheet of Freezer Paper, you could be stitching your free Inklingo block within 15 minutes!

My Separating Row Design
This week’s filler row on Stof Genoeg has curved lines, but only straight piecing! It is very quick and easy to make!
My filler row for Fall, symbolizing the hood of a mushroom.
My notes on this design: Half Drop Polkadot Row – 4 inches high. I designed this to be made as one entire row (not separate square blocks, as the picture from EQ is showing), with 2 inch half circles floating on top.
The partial circles are cut from felt, with only a seam allowance added to the straight edges. They are stitched between the red and brown background strips. It symbolizes the hood of a mushroom, for Fall.
I drafted this block myself, especially for this EQ Seasons Row-A-Long.

Note: You can only open the file if you have EQ7 software. You don’t need the EQ file for participating in the Row-A-Long. My EQ7 tutorial: Searching for Notecard Information
My two previous EQ tutorials were on Notecards. Last week I showed you how to limit or expand your results from a Block Notecard search, by selecting specific Block Notecard fields to search.
This week I will show you how to come up with more search results in another way: By changing the number of Search results EQ comes up with. The default number of results for a Notecard search is 50. You can change this up to 999! I am showing you how I did this in a screen recording.
I recommend you watch this video on full screen, so you will be able to read the text. The video (57 seconds) has no sound, so I will talk you through what I am doing right here. The first steps are practically the same as in the previous tutorial, so this may look familiar to you.
I will post the video again at the end of the tutorial, so you don’t have to scroll up to watch it again, if you missed something.
I click the Libraries Tab at the top of my screen. → A window opens with the names of all EQ Libraries.
I hover over ‘Block Library…’ with my mouse, until it turns blue. Then I click to select Block Library → The Block Libraries overview opens.
At the bottom of this box, you see two rows of buttons. The upper row contains the ‘Search’ button. It has two arrows on the right side, meaning more options will appear when you click this button.
I click the ‘Search’ button → Two more buttons appear: ‘By Notecard’ and ‘By Category’.
I hover my mouse over ‘By Notecard’→ it turns blue. I click to select this option → The ‘Search Block Notecard’ box appears.
It reads ‘Find all blocks with this notecard text’, with a textbox underneath. It has ‘Inklingo’ written in it.
By default, all three checkboxes are ticked, in front of the ‘Search the Name field’, ‘Search the Reference field’ and ‘Search the Notes field’.
Below that, it says ‘Find at most’ with a box behind it. In the box is the number ’50’. This is the default number.
I click the box and drag to select ’50’ → 50 turns blue.
I type directly over the selected ’50’ in the box: ‘999’. This is the maximum number of search results.
I click the ‘Search’ button → An hourglass icon appears, indicating EQ is searching the block libraries for my information.
When EQ has finished searching, a small notification pops up, saying. ‘Result of search for “inklingo”: 164 items’.
I click the OK button → The Block Libraries open the ‘Search Results’ tab.
I browse through the search results, by clicking the little triangle next to the slider bar underneath the block overview. I am showing you all 164 blocks :-).
At the end of the overview, I close the Block Libraries, by clicking the ‘Close’ button.

My Separating Row Design
Last week, my filler row had straight lines. Today’s row has curved lines. I am showing the row below in two color variations. You can piece the 3 inch clamshells, or appliqué them. In my free pattern I am giving you instructions for both piecing with Inklingo™, and for raw edge fusible machine applique.

My notes on this design:
Clamshell Row – 3 inches high (20 whole clamshells).
Curved piecing (hand or machine) in a continuous pattern. Medium to Advanced skill level. Alternatively, you can use fusible raw edge machine applique for the two color version, and appliqué the clamshells on a background strip.
When I already had four filler rows designed, it occurred to me that the 3 inch Inklingo™ clamshells would make a very nice, original filler row. So I added this one as an extra option,especially for those who own the required Inklingo™ shape collections (Inklingo Clamshell 3 inch and Inklingo Clamshell Edges 3 inch).
And because I want to include everyone in the fun, I added instructions for a quick and simple machine appliqué technique, for which you only need the template on my free pdf pattern.
In short: You fuse the clamshell shapes to a strip of background piecing. And only after assembling your quilt sandwich, you stitch the leaves down with simple machine quilting along the inside edges of your appliqué. So it is appliquéing and quilting in one. Super quick!
But I think the effect of this separating row would be nicer when you piece the clamshells, and use two background fabrics, the ones used in the row above and below your clamshell row. This way, it will appear as if only the clamshells themselves are separating the rows above and below.
I am showing an example here with Seasonal blocks that I found in the EQ Libraries.

You can also use this idea for a quick and modern row quilt, by alternating single strips of clamshells with unpieced strips. I am showing an example here:

My inspiration: the link with the Seasons theme
The two color version of the filler row symbolizes stylized Ginkgo leaves. The Ginkgo tree is a symbol of longevity, endurance, vitality, peace and hope.
When I thought of the Seasons theme, I thought of time passing, the ever recurring cycles of life and nature, and the hope that a new Spring brings. That seemed to fit with Ginkgo leaves very well. I used red and white, just because I like the fresh contrast of these colors.

The version in mixed shades of blue represents waves, which are lively and fascinating in all seasons. So you can use this row for any season, or between different seasons.

My EQ7 tutorial: Searching for Notecard Information
In the previous tutorial I showed you where to find your Notecards. One of the uses of the Notecards is for searching in the EQ Libraries.
You can search for blocks in two ways:
By Category (like ‘appliqué blocks’, ‘holiday blocks’, etc.)
By Notecard.
The Notecard search function allows you to search for (part of) any information that is written on the Notecard.
You can search for information in the following three Notecard fields:
Name field
Reference field
Notes field
By default, EQ searches in all three. By ticking or unticking the checkboxes for each option, you can limit or expand your search options.

(By limiting my search options this way, EQ will finish its search quicker. I only want to find blocks which have ‘6 inch’ written in the Notes field. Similarly, you can search for a Block name only. If you click a checkbox again, the tick mark will appear again, and the default Notecard search option is restored.)
I click the ‘Search’ button → An hourglass icon appears, indicating EQ is searching the block libraries for my information.
When EQ has finished searching, a small notification pops up, saying. ‘Result of search for “6 inch”: 28 items’.
I click the OK button → The Block Libraries open the ‘Search Results’ tab.

I close the Block Notecard by clicking it on the top right button, marked with an X.
I close the Block Libraries, by clicking the ‘Close’ button.

You probably want to practice a Block Notecard search with something other than ‘6 inch’. If you try to search for ‘6 inch’ in your EQ, you will most likely come up with nothing. I have added most of the 6 inch blocks to the EQ Libraries myself, or I have recorded the preferred size information in the Block Notecard myself. This sort of information is not native to EQ, since you can print every block in any size. But I hope this shows you it can be very handy to record anything and everything in your Notecards!

My Design
As I announced in my previous post, I have designed five filler or separating rows. The first row is a simple row of hour glass blocks.
Here is what it says on the notecard in my EQ7 project file:

My inspiration
The hourglass block symbolizes the passing of time between seasons, so this row is nice to put between different seasons. The block used is the Basic 4X block from the EQ Block Libraries.

Checking notecard information for Quilts and Blocks in Project Files
My tutorials in the weeks to come will focus on the notecards.

And for that, first you need to know that notecards exist. And second, where to find them. If you are a beginner, and don’t know about notecards yet, I will show you the way.
I have made a screen recording of EQ7 on my Mac, in which I am showing you the notecards in an example quilt project file (which happens to look a lot like the EQ Seasons RAL file that I am sharing with you).
I recommend you watch the video (50 seconds) on full screen, so you will be able to read the text. The video does not have sound. I will talk you through what I am doing right here. At the end, I will post the video again, so you can watch it again, in case you missed something.
I have opened an existing project file, that contains quilts and blocks.
I click on the ‘View Sketchbook’ button. → The sketchbook opens on the Colors tab.
I click on the Quilts Tab → The sketchbook opens on the Quilts Tab, showing a preview of a quilt.
The grey bar below the quilt preview has a row of buttons. One of these buttons reads ‘Notecard’.
I click the ‘Notecard’ button. → The Quilt Notecard appears. There is now a thick line around the ‘Notecard’ button, telling you it is the Notecard you are viewing.
On the Notecard, you can read the information I have previously recorded in the Notecard fields ‘Name’, ‘Reference’ and ‘Notes’.
The ‘Notes’ field expands in size according to the amount of text you type in there. With the slider bar on the right you can view more information: Either click and hold the small triangle on the bottom of the slider bar, or click the slider and drag it down.
If you want to return to the top of the Notes field, click and hold the triangle at the top, or click and drag the slider up again.
I close the Quilt Notecard by clicking it on the top right button, marked with an X. → The Quilt Notecard disappears.
Next, I click the Blocks Tab. → The Sketchbook opens on the Blocks Tab.
The blocks in my sketchbook are shown in rows. You can see four of them.
The first block is automatically selected. A block that is selected has a blue line around it.
The name of the selected block is shown in the grey bar below the block overview. It takes that name from the Block Notecard.
At the bottom of the Blocks Tab in the Sketchbook, you will find the same row of Buttons as you have seen on the Quilts Tab.
I click on the Notecard Button. → The Notecard for the selected block appears. You can read the information that is on the Block Notecard in the Notecard fields ‘Name’, ‘Reference’, ‘Library’ and ‘Notes’.
I close the Block Notecard by clicking it on the top right button, marked with an X. → The Block Notecard disappears.
Next, I scroll through the Block overview to find a Library Block of which I have not edited the Notecard.
I select the Pumpkin block, and click the Notecard button. → The Notecard opens. You can see there is only information in the fields ‘Name’ and ‘Reference’. The Notes field is empty.
I close the Sketchbook. End of screen recording.
Additional information:
There are notecards attached to all Sketchbook items, so to Thread, Fabric, Photos, and Embroidery as well, except for Colors. You can see this in the beginning of the screen recording, when the Sketchbook opens at the Colors Tab. There is no Notecard Button beneath the colors.

So now you know where to find the Notecards. If you download EQ project files, please make it a habit of checking them!
